Bassey Otu Puts Stop To Roadside Vehicle Checks.
The Cross River State Government has prohibited Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) from carrying out roadside operations, restricting their responsibilities to office-based functions.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The directive was announced by Governor Bassey Otu on Saturday in Calabar following a meeting with transport stakeholders. The governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Linus Obogo, confirmed the development in a statement.
The decision comes after complaints from commercial transport operators who accused enforcement officers of harassment, issuing inflated fines, and intimidating motorists during roadside inspections. Under the new policy, VIO officials will operate only within their offices, while other transport regulatory agencies are instructed to work strictly within their statutory mandates.
As part of broader reforms in the transport sector, the state government approved reductions in daily transport ticket fees. The fee for commercial vehicles has been lowered from ₦850 to ₦500, with penalties for failing to purchase tickets reduced to ₦10,000. Traffic-related fines have also been cut by 50% and are now payable only into designated government accounts to prevent illegal collections.
For tricycle operators, the daily ticket fee has been reduced from ₦1,200 to ₦500, with new operational guidelines introduced. Night operations for tricycles are now banned, with daily activities ending by 6 p.m. Additionally, commercial bus and tricycle operators are exempt from purchasing tickets on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays.
Governor Otu explained that the reforms aim to restore order in the transport sector while easing financial burdens on operators. The Commercial Transport Regulatory Agency will now focus on vehicle registration and approved ticket sales, while enforcement officers must operate in proper uniforms and with verifiable identification. The Traffic Management and Regulatory Agency is instructed to focus solely on traffic management. These directives will take effect from March 9, 2026.
Speaking on the development, Sunday Dennis, Metropolitan Chairman of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, said the union would convene an emergency meeting to review the directives and assess their impact on operators.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.
The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.
Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.
He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.
“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.
