Tinubu’s Ambassadorial Picks Spark Outrage Among Career Diplomats.

Controversy has erupted over the planned ambassadorial appointments by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, as the Federal Government prepares to submit a new list of diplomatic nominees.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Sources revealed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria is expected to receive the list next week for processing before eventual confirmation and deployment.

However, the proposed postings have reportedly stirred discontent within Nigeria’s diplomatic corps. Insiders say about 95% of career ambassadors are slated for African countries, while non-career political appointees may be posted to Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and the Americas.

Some diplomatic sources, speaking to Sahara Reporters, criticized the arrangement as unwise. A government insider warned the decision could undermine Nigeria’s diplomatic interests amid rising global tensions.

“What a poor strategy for President Tinubu’s government to send 95% of career diplomats to Africa and assign political appointees to Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and the Americas,” the source said.

The source added that with global geopolitical flashpoints, Nigeria should deploy its most experienced diplomats to strategic locations to safeguard national interests.

Sources also noted that prominent administration supporters Femi Fani-Kayode and Reno Omokri were not included in the circulating list but could still be nominated in the final stage—Omokri possibly to Spain and Fani-Kayode to Germany.

The perceived prioritisation of political loyalists has reportedly caused resentment among career diplomats, with some officials feeling sidelined despite their professional expertise.

“Diplomacy has never been the focus of this administration,” one insider said, adding that experienced diplomats in key global capitals would better protect Nigeria’s interests and international influence.

Former ambassador to Mexico and Singapore, Ogbole Amedu Ode, noted that ambassadorial appointments are constitutionally the president’s prerogative, usually guided by recommendations from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He added that postings are structured by station charters outlining the objectives of each ambassador.

Ode also suggested that assigning career diplomats to Africa reflects Nigeria’s longstanding foreign policy focus on the continent. “Africa is the centrepiece of our foreign policy,” he said.

According to sources, the preliminary ambassadorial postings include:

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.

The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.

Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.

He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.

Meanwhile, comedians Ayobami Ajewole, popularly known as Woli Agba, and Olamide Oladimeji, also known as Dele Omo Woli, have threatened legal action against individuals allegedly linking them to Toluwanisings’ death.

Woli Agba disclosed this in a public notice shared on his Instagram page on Sunday.

In the notice issued by their solicitors, Gemgold, the comedians warned members of the public against publishing or circulating allegations they described as false and defamatory against them.
