Detention Illegal, Release El-Rufai Now, Lawyer Tells ICPC.
Ubong Akpan, lawyer to former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, has accused the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) of unlawful detention and false imprisonment.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a letter dated March 6, 2026, addressed to the ICPC chairman, Akpan demanded the immediate release of his client, warning that any continued detention would attract personal liability.
“Every hour he remains in your custody is a separate and distinct tort of false imprisonment for which you will be held personally liable,” he wrote.
Akpan further accused the anti-corruption agency of dishonourable conduct and blatant disregard for judicial authority during El-Rufai’s detention. According to him, the commission’s actions over the past 15 days constitute a serious abuse of the legal process.
“What we have witnessed from the Commission over the past 15 days is nothing short of an absolute disgrace to the practice of law, a contumacious disregard for judicial authority, and a borderline criminal abuse of the court system,” he said.
He alleged that the agency treated the liberty of a citizen as something that could be manipulated through forum shopping and misrepresentation in court.
The lawyer outlined several alleged irregularities in the handling of the case, including:
-
Approaching a magistrate court over alleged money laundering offences, which he described as forum shopping and abuse of court process
-
Obtaining a remand order without jurisdiction, amounting to fraud on the court
-
Making sworn representations and later breaching them
-
Failing to serve the remand order on El-Rufai
-
Detaining him for 15 days without formally charging him in court
-
Filing a renewal application before a court allegedly lacking jurisdiction
-
Attempting to renew what he described as a void remand order
Akpan also accused the ICPC of violating its commitment to charge El-Rufai in court before the expiration of the 14-day remand warrant. He said the agency instead kept the former governor in custody while seeking a fresh remand order from a magistrate court.
He demanded that the commission withdraw the “Motion Ex-Parte” seeking renewal of El-Rufai’s detention before the Chief Magistrate Court in Bwari, Abuja, and called on the agency to publish a public apology to El-Rufai in three national newspapers.
Akpan stated that his client is seeking ₦2 billion in damages and legal costs for the alleged violation of his fundamental rights. He also warned of further legal action against officials involved in the case.
According to him, the matter would be referred to the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, and the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, for investigation and potential prosecution of officers accused of submitting false affidavits.
The lawyer added that a complaint would also be filed with the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee against ICPC lawyers allegedly involved in the process.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.
The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.
Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.
He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.
“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.
Meanwhile, comedians Ayobami Ajewole, popularly known as Woli Agba, and Olamide Oladimeji, also known as Dele Omo Woli, have threatened legal action against individuals allegedly linking them to Toluwanisings’ death.
Woli Agba disclosed this in a public notice shared on his Instagram page on Sunday.
In the notice issued by their solicitors, Gemgold, the comedians warned members of the public against publishing or circulating allegations they described as false and defamatory against them.
The legal notice maintained that the allegations were baseless and intended to damage the reputations of the two entertainers.
