Henry Omoile, who is standing trial alongside former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele over an alleged $4.5 billion fraud, admitted on Friday, March 6, 2026, that he lied in a statement he previously gave to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Omoile made the revelation while testifying in a trial-within-a-trial before Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Special Offences Court in Ikeja, Lagos. The hearing was set to determine whether the statement he gave to EFCC investigators was made voluntarily.

He told the court that the statements marked as Exhibits TWT 1–4 did not contain a genuine confession, claiming that he wrote only what investigators allegedly instructed him to write.

“The statement exhibits in trial-within-trial 1–4—I did not confess in that statement. I lied. EFCC threatened that if I did not write what they wanted, they would charge me to court,” Omoile said.

Emefiele is facing a 19-count charge by the EFCC related to receiving gratification and making corrupt demands during his tenure as CBN governor. Omoile faces a three-count charge concerning unlawful acceptance of gifts as an agent. Both have pleaded not guilty.

During cross-examination by prosecution counsel Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, Omoile admitted that he was cautioned before making the statement and that he signed the cautionary notice.

When asked if the EFCC had filed a counter-affidavit to challenge his allegations, Omoile confirmed that they had, though he did not present the document to the court. He also said he discussed filing a fundamental human rights enforcement suit with his lawyer and confirmed that the motion ex parte was filed that morning.

Omoile acknowledged that the ruling he submitted did not directly affect Exhibit D4 but maintained that the issues were connected.

“I just wanted to go home,” he told the court regarding the circumstances under which the statement was made.

He further admitted that he had not filed any complaint or petition against the EFCC investigators over the alleged threats.

Earlier, Omoile claimed that EFCC investigators tried to pressure him into implicating Emefiele. He said the head of the investigative team, identified as Alvan, promised that he could secure bail and potentially avoid charges if he cooperated by providing incriminating information against the former CBN governor.

Justice Oshodi adjourned the matter until April 17, 2026, for the adoption of final written addresses.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.

The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.

Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.

He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.
