Rhodes-Vivour Declares 2027 Lagos Governorship Ambition.

Architect and former Lagos governorship candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has confirmed his intention to contest the 2027 Lagos State governorship election, stating that he is politically stronger now than he was during the 2023 polls.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Rhodes-Vivour, who recently joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), made the announcement during an interview on SaharaTV, where he also criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over its governance in Lagos.

According to him, his decision to run again has been public knowledge since 2024.

“Why do people keep asking the same question? Everyone already knows I’m running. I have been saying since 2024 that by God’s grace, I will contest again,” Rhodes-Vivour said.

He explained that after the 2023 election, he continued his legal battle up to the Supreme Court while also expanding his grassroots political engagement across Lagos.

“We built significant momentum in 2023, and I didn’t go quiet after the election. I pursued the matter to the Supreme Court, challenging INEC’s declaration. Since then, we’ve strengthened our presence across Lagos through initiatives like micro-health insurance programmes and grassroots engagement. Politically, I’m stronger now than I was in 2023,” he said.

Rhodes-Vivour added that his decision to leave the Labour Party was motivated by the need for opposition parties to unite.

He noted that internal disputes within the party prevented it from consolidating the gains made during the 2023 elections.

“Since 2023, I have maintained that the opposition cannot afford to remain divided. When opposition parties are fragmented, it creates opportunities for electoral manipulation because the forces that should unite to resist it are split,” he said.

He also stated that the party became preoccupied with court cases and internal conflicts instead of strengthening its grassroots structures.

The former governorship candidate further criticised the Lagos State Government over demolition exercises and what he described as the absence of housing policies for low-income residents.

He referenced communities such as Makoko and Ilasan, where residents were reportedly displaced.

“There is no clear plan for the poor in Lagos. More than 70 percent of residents are struggling, yet the government continues to demolish homes without providing resettlement plans,” he said.

“The most dangerous situation is when people feel they have nothing left to lose. Destroying homes without offering alternative housing creates social instability.”

Rhodes-Vivour also accused members of the Lagos State House of Assembly of mismanaging public procurement funds.

According to him, inflated government budgets reflect deep-rooted corruption.

“A generator that should cost about ₦16 million is being budgeted at ₦130 million, while a car worth ₦30 or ₦40 million is listed at ₦450 million,” he alleged.

“If just ₦1 billion is properly invested in education or healthcare at the local government level, people will feel the impact. Unfortunately, these funds are simply shared.”

He also rejected claims that Peter Obi’s victory in Lagos during the 2023 presidential election was driven by ethnic sentiments.

Rhodes-Vivour argued that voters in the state prioritised competence above ethnic identity.

“Lagos is different. Lagosians overwhelmingly voted for Peter Obi because they believed he was the most competent candidate,” he said.

“Governance should not be about ethnicity. If someone is diverting funds meant for education, healthcare and infrastructure, the fact that he speaks your language does not make it right.”

Looking ahead to the 2027 election, Rhodes-Vivour said his campaign will focus strongly on grassroots mobilisation and direct engagement with residents across the state.

According to him, building personal connections with voters will help reduce fears about political change in Lagos.

“Because the APC has controlled Lagos for so long, many people fear what might happen if another party takes over,” he said.

“But once people meet you and understand who you are, that fear begins to fade. That is why we are focusing on building strong grassroots relationships.”

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.

The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.

Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.

He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.

Meanwhile, comedians Ayobami Ajewole, popularly known as Woli Agba, and Olamide Oladimeji, also known as Dele Omo Woli, have threatened legal action against individuals allegedly linking them to Toluwanisings’ death.

In the notice issued by their solicitors, Gemgold, the comedians warned members of the public against publishing or circulating allegations they described as false and defamatory against them.
