PDP Would Have Won 2023 Presidential Election If Peter Obi Stayed With Atiku – Lai Mohammed.

Published

on

Former Minister of Information and National Orientation, Lai Mohammed, has stated that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) might have won the 2023 presidential election if the former Labour Party candidate, Peter Obi, had stayed in the party and maintained his alliance with Atiku Abubakar.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Mohammed made the remarks during an appearance on Edmund Obilo’s podcast, State Affairs, arguing that Obi’s departure from the PDP and subsequent candidacy under the Labour Party split the opposition vote and altered the election dynamics.

“I think that if he had stayed with Atiku, PDP would have won,” Mohammed said.

He further asserted that even if Obi had garnered as many as 10 million votes, he still would not have become president. “Even if Peter Obi had won 10 million votes, he could not have become president,” he added.

Mohammed dismissed claims that Obi was rigged out of the election, insisting that the Labour Party candidate neither won nor was unfairly denied victory.

“After the election, its legitimacy was questioned. On social media in 2023, it seemed like the Labour Party had won, but they did not. The perception was that they were rigged out, but they were not. They did not win and were not rigged out,” he said.

Peter Obi Came Third

Mohammed emphasized that the results of the 2023 presidential election were clear and constitutionally valid. He explained that Nigeria’s constitution sets two requirements for a presidential victory: obtaining the highest number of votes nationwide and securing at least one-quarter of the votes in two-thirds of the states.

“The constitution of Nigeria is very clear: to win, you must have the highest votes and at least one-quarter of votes in two-thirds of the states,” he said.

According to Mohammed, Obi failed to meet either threshold. “Obi did not come first, nor second; he came a close third to Atiku. He scored one-quarter of votes in 15 states, Atiku in 21 states, and only Asiwaju [Bola Tinubu] secured the majority and one-quarter of votes in 29 states,” he added.

Peter Obi Was Not the Biggest Threat

Contrary to claims that Obi was the main electoral challenge, Mohammed said the former Anambra State governor was not the biggest obstacle. “Obi was not the biggest headache,” he noted, stressing that a united PDP would have likely changed the election outcome.

He also revealed that he and his team engaged in a diplomatic effort to counter misinformation about the election’s legitimacy. “I personally, along with my team, met think tanks in the US, UK, and international media to explain why Peter Obi could not have won the presidential election,” he said.

Mohammed recalled that the election’s credibility was questioned in some international circles after the results were announced, prompting these outreach efforts. According to him, the engagements were meant to clarify constitutional requirements and present official figures to counter the narrative that Obi was denied victory.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.

The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.

Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.

He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.

Meanwhile, comedians Ayobami Ajewole, popularly known as Woli Agba, and Olamide Oladimeji, also known as Dele Omo Woli, have threatened legal action against individuals allegedly linking them to Toluwanisings’ death.

Woli Agba disclosed this in a public notice shared on his Instagram page on Sunday.

In the notice issued by their solicitors, Gemgold, the comedians warned members of the public against publishing or circulating allegations they described as false and defamatory against them.
