The visit came two weeks after Mpigi passed away at 64 in a London hospital following a brief illness.

Until his death, Mpigi represented Rivers South-East Senatorial District in the Senate and served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works.

The condolence visit was confirmed in a statement by Akpabio’s Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom.

During the visit, Akpabio described Mpigi’s passing as a profound loss to both the National Assembly and the nation. “Senator Mpigi was a dedicated public servant who contributed significantly to legislative development and nation-building,” he said.

He added, “He was deeply committed to the welfare of his constituents, and his passion for service will be remembered. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of leaders.”

The Senate President encouraged the family to draw strength from Mpigi’s impactful life, assuring them that the Senate and the entire National Assembly share in their grief. He also prayed for the repose of Mpigi’s soul and asked God to grant his family the strength to bear the irreplaceable loss.

The visit followed a trip to London by Nyesom Wike, who led a high-profile delegation of Rivers State political leaders to console Mpigi’s family. That delegation included Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly Martin Amaewhule, Senators Magnus Abe, Allwell Onyesoh, Olaka Nwogu, Rivers State PDP Chairman Aaron Chukwuemeka, Felix Nweke, Kenneth Chikere, and Hon. Dum Deekor.

During the London visit, Wike noted that the delegation was sent by Rivers State leaders to personally convey their condolences to the bereaved family.

Mpigi’s death has continued to attract tributes from political figures across party lines, highlighting his influence in Rivers politics and his years of legislative service at the National Assembly. Colleagues remember him as a calm and committed lawmaker who prioritized constituency interests over partisan politics, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and public service.
