Fresh Petrol Price Hike Looms Amid Middle East Crisis.

Published

on

Nigerians may soon pay up to ₦1,000 per litre for Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) starting Tuesday and Wednesday, March 3–4, 2026, following a new increase in the gantry price of petrol by Dangote Refinery.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Petroleum marketers and retailers warned that the adjustment would likely lead to higher pump prices nationwide. The refinery reportedly raised its gantry price to ₦874 per litre on Monday, a ₦75 increase, amid rising global crude oil prices driven by the escalating Iran–US–Israel conflict.

The latest Middle East tensions erupted after Iranian leaders, including Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, were reportedly killed in a Friday night strike, prompting retaliatory attacks on US allies such as Saudi Arabia. On Monday, oil facilities in Saudi Arabia and Qatar were targeted, disrupting operations in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil route.

Saudi Aramco’s Ras Tanura refinery reportedly suffered a drone strike, causing a shutdown, while QatarEnergy suspended LNG production. These events have intensified concerns over global energy supply, pushing crude oil prices to $78.50 per barrel for Brent and $71.84 for West Texas Intermediate as of Monday. Goldman Sachs warned that prolonged hostilities could drive LNG prices in Europe and Asia to $25 per million British thermal units.

Domestic fuel prices ranged from ₦870 to ₦899 per litre Monday night. A manager at a Dangote-supported MRS station in Abuja confirmed that new retail prices would take effect from Tuesday.

Speaking on the situation, Chinedu Ukadike, spokesperson for the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), explained that rising global crude prices from the Middle East conflict are pushing domestic petrol costs higher.

“There will be price fluctuations and increases due to the Iran–US–Israel war. Although scarcity is not an issue, Dangote has increased its price to align with the international market. Pump prices will depend on logistics and transport and could range between ₦980 and ₦1,000. There is no need for panic buying, as supply will continue, supported by crude supplied in naira by the Federal Government. Moving vessels in the Gulf will remain difficult, putting pressure on global crude supply,” he said.

Similarly, Billy Gillis-Harry, National President of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN), said the hike is a direct response to escalating crude oil prices globally.

“Iran is a major crude supplier, and any disruption affects global prices. Our local refineries will naturally respond by increasing domestic prices,” he stated.

Industry experts noted that while a shortage may not be imminent, ongoing global volatility could keep domestic pump prices under pressure in the coming days.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.

The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.

Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.

He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.
