The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has revealed how President Bola Tinubu’s directive helped the All Progressives Congress (APC) clinch a majority of seats in the FCT Area Council elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In the polls held on 21st February 2026, the APC won five out of the six Area Council chairmanship positions in the territory.

Speaking during his first monthly media briefing for 2026 in Abuja on Monday, Wike explained the reasons behind the party’s success.

He said President Tinubu instructed him to visit satellite towns to ensure residents experienced the impact of governance firsthand. According to Wike, the party’s focus on these areas, rather than the city centre, was decisive.

“Let’s tell ourselves the simple truth. Who could have beaten Asiwaju’s government in this FCT election if all we did was focus on the city? Historically, ruling parties struggle to win in the city because the people talk a lot but rarely turn out to vote,” Wike stated.

Wike, who noted that he was personally appointed as a minister by President Tinubu, emphasized the importance of extending governance beyond the city.

“The President said we must go to the satellite towns and let them feel the impact of governance, let them feel the impact of government. And we did that. Places like Karu, Kabusa, and Wasa showed us how happy the people are. That’s where voters came out in large numbers,” he said.

He said: “I will be running for governor in the 2027 governorship election. I have come to plead with you to set up a small committee… to determine how we can collaborate to make this happen.”

He also questioned whether Ogun State would experience a “coronation” or a competitive election process, urging stakeholders to allow open political contest.

The PDP chieftain noted that Ogun West’s long-standing exclusion from producing a governor is a legitimate grievance, but stressed that aspirations must still be tested through competition.

He advocated issue-based campaigns ahead of 2027, rejecting “money politics” and challenging aspirants to public debates on governance.

Showunmi maintained that he has no history of violence or political thuggery, insisting the election should be centred on ideas and development plans for the state.

In response, IPAC leadership and other political actors at the event called for collaboration and careful selection of leaders ahead of the 2027 elections.
