Defections Surge: APC National Chairman Says Opposition Parties Are “Dying”.

Published

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has defended the recent surge of defections into its ranks, attributing the trend to what it described as strong party management and effective governance.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, made the remarks on Sunday during the Citizens’ Townhall on the 2026 Electoral Act, dismissing fears that the defections could weaken Nigeria’s multi-party system.

“It is very fair. Many politicians have realised that other political parties are declining. They saw a reason to join us because of how we operate, from party management to organisation and mobilisation,” Yilwatda said.

He added that the APC’s internal processes and governance record make it an attractive platform for politicians seeking a competitive and well-structured party.

“APC appears to be the best party in terms of mobilisation, organisation, and governance. That provides room for competition. When faced with a choice, I choose good governance, solid party management, and transparency,” he stated.

Citing internal unity as a key strength, Yilwatda pointed to a recent consensus arrangement in Osun State.

“For example, in Osun, all nine aspirants agreed on a single candidate through consensus. No other political party in Nigeria has achieved such without ending up in court. APC has successfully done this in two states,” he explained.

In recent months, APC has attracted politicians from opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP), bolstering its ranks.

The ruling party currently governs 31 states and maintains a strong majority in the National Assembly.

While critics warn that the trend could push the country toward a one-party dominance, Yilwatda insisted the defections are voluntary and a reflection of the APC’s “solid organisational structures” and governance approach.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.

The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.

Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.

He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.

Meanwhile, comedians Ayobami Ajewole, popularly known as Woli Agba, and Olamide Oladimeji, also known as Dele Omo Woli, have threatened legal action against individuals allegedly linking them to Toluwanisings’ death.

Woli Agba disclosed this in a public notice shared on his Instagram page on Sunday.

In the notice issued by their solicitors, Gemgold, the comedians warned members of the public against publishing or circulating allegations they described as false and defamatory against them.

The legal notice maintained that the allegations were baseless and intended to damage the reputations of the two entertainers.
