The Senate has assured Nigerians that it will finalise the amendment of the 1999 Constitution to pave the way for the establishment of state police before the end of 2026.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The assurance was given by the Senate spokesperson, Yemi Adaramodu, in an interview with Sunday Punch on Friday, noting that constitutional review proceedings would resume once plenary reconvenes next week.

This move comes after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu formally requested the National Assembly to initiate amendments to include state police as part of efforts to curb insecurity nationwide.

During an interfaith breaking of fast at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Tinubu urged lawmakers to prioritise the constitutional amendment.

“What I am asking for tonight is for you to start thinking about how best to amend the constitution to incorporate the state police, so we can secure our country, protect our forests from marauders, and free our children from fear,” the President said.

Speaking to members of the House of Representatives on Friday, Tinubu also emphasised that any state police framework must include safeguards to prevent abuse, stating it should not be “a straight free fall for everybody” but guided by checks and balances based on past experiences.

Senate spokesperson Adaramodu assured that the upper chamber is ready to fast-track the amendment, noting that substantial groundwork had already been carried out before attention shifted to the Electoral Act review.

He said, “Once we resume next week, we will immediately commence the process of reviewing the constitution for the establishment of state police. Nigerians can be assured that before the general election, the constitution will be amended to allow for the creation of state police. We will handle this expeditiously and ensure that before the end of the year, the amendment is completed and sent to Mr. President for assent.”

Adaramodu also revealed that nationwide consultations had been conducted, including engagements across geopolitical zones and meetings with relevant stakeholders. The committee handling the review has compiled reports and findings from these consultations.

“Previously, we had done a lot of groundwork but had to pause for the Electoral Act amendment, which has now been signed into law. We also had to consider the 2026 Appropriation Bill, which briefly suspended plenary. With those matters concluded, we are now resuming the constitutional review immediately,” he explained.

Describing the proposal as widely supported, Adaramodu added, “State police is a popular demand. The President, state governors, and the National Assembly all support it.”
