The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reacted to the exchange between Governor Alex Otti and Mr. Chika Nwabueze, Group News Editor of Don FM Umuahia, during the Governor’s media chat on Friday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Abraham Amah, the PDP expressed concern over remarks attributed to Governor Otti, condemning the public insult directed at Nwabueze for asking a legitimate question about the data and measurable outcomes of government policies affecting ordinary citizens.

Chairman Amah emphasized that it is the constitutional role of the media to ask questions on behalf of the people and argued that there was nothing improper about the inquiry raised.

“We state clearly that there is nothing offensive, improper, or unintelligent about a journalist seeking empirical evidence of governance outcomes. Such questions are central to responsible journalism and democratic accountability.

“When legitimate questions are met with personal attacks instead of facts, it undermines public discourse, erodes confidence in leadership, and signals intolerance toward accountability.

“Targeting a journalist for performing this duty is an affront not only to the individual and the media organization he represents but also to the people of Abia State whose interests he sought to uphold,” the PDP said.

The party called for respect for press freedom and urged the Governor to provide verifiable data in response to public inquiries to ensure transparency and accountability.

Responding to the matter, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Otti, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, stated that “the Don FM journalist should have evaluated the verifiable impact of Otti’s performance by considering the rehabilitated Ohokobo-Afara Road in Umuahia,” which, according to the CPS, directly benefited Nwabueze’s residence.

Yilwatda made the statement on Wednesday during a media chat in Abuja, stressing that membership of the APC is voluntary and not forced on anyone.

“If he wants to join the APC, he is free. We don’t compel people to join; they do so willingly,” he said.

He added that cross-party appointments are not new in Nigeria’s political history, noting that past administrations also appointed members of opposition parties into key positions.

Yilwatda cited examples such as Bala Mohammed and Adamu Aliero, who served as ministers under PDP governments despite being affiliated with other parties at the time.

He questioned the criticism directed at President Bola Tinubu over Wike’s appointment, arguing that similar decisions were taken by previous administrations without controversy.

The APC chairman also pointed to other non-APC members serving in the current government, saying Wike should not be singled out.

He further stated that Wike obtained approval from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before accepting the ministerial appointment in 2023.

Yilwatda maintained that President Tinubu has continued to demonstrate openness by appointing individuals across party lines based on competence.
