Nigerians Have Reduced democracy To ‘Skit’- Showunmi Laments.

The convener of the Alternative Movement, Segun Showunmi, has criticized Nigerians for reducing democratic participation to “skit making,” warning that democracy without active citizen engagement allows politicians to manipulate the system.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

He made the remarks on Friday while receiving members of the Action Alliance and Labour Party at his Abeokuta residence, Ogun State.

Showunmi, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, added that voter cards of non-participating citizens are often exploited by politicians to rig elections and inflate vote counts.

He said, “What’s the point of a democracy if people don’t participate? Nigerians have reduced it to skits. Instead of joining parties and taking their PVCs seriously, many collect them reluctantly just for identification. We now have over 90 million PVCs, but how many are actively participating?”

Showunmi further noted that while Nigerians frequently discuss politics and governance, active engagement remains low. He urged citizens to educate their families, stressing that apathy is a major threat to the nation.

“This is beyond polling units. We must encourage responsible participation at home and in communities. Complaining without acting creates a huge democratic challenge. We cannot allow the ruling party to dominate the ballot unopposed in 2027,” he said.

He also appealed to politicians, particularly in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), to stop blaming the Electoral Act for their failures, emphasizing that the law applies to all contestants and that the focus should be on grassroots mobilization and strengthening party structures.

Earlier, the Ogun State Chairman of Action Alliance, Prof. Tunde Adebola, pledged his party’s support to Showunmi’s governorship ambitions in the upcoming election.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.

The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.

Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.

He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.
