The 24-year-old is now eligible for selection ahead of the March international window, when the Super Eagles travel to Amman, Jordan, for a four-nation invitational tournament. Nigeria will face Iran on March 27 and take on hosts Jordan four days later at the Amman International Stadium, with the team expected to begin camp on March 24.
Okonkwo’s clearance comes at a crucial time, as Nigeria’s goalkeeping department faces uncertainty with first-choice keeper Stanley Nwabali currently clubless, raising questions about his match fitness. His eligibility provides a timely boost for head coach Eric Chelle and his staff.
FIFA approved Okonkwo’s switch from England to Nigeria in January 2026, ending a process that had been underway for some time. Born in London to Nigerian parents, he previously represented England at youth levels, earning caps with the U-15, U-16, U-17, and U-18 sides between 2015 and 2019.
Okonkwo’s commitment to Nigeria followed discussions with Chelle during the Unity Cup in London last year. While he had hoped to join the squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, administrative issues delayed his inclusion.
At club level, Okonkwo has established himself as a reliable presence for Wrexham. The former Arsenal goalkeeper stepped up after Danny Ward suffered an elbow injury, delivering a string of solid performances.
Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson praised Okonkwo’s development, saying, “Arthur’s a very influential signing for us when we first brought him in. Despite a few injuries along the way, he has adapted well, always responded strongly, and continues to improve.”
This season, Okonkwo has kept six clean sheets in 20 league appearances.
