Obi emphasized that Nigeria’s primary bottleneck is the transmission and distribution network rather than generation capacity, noting that the country already generates over 10,000 megawatts. To solve this, he intends to scale up decentralized and embedded power models similar to Geometric Power in Aba to support industrial centers like Kano. Furthermore, Obi stressed that his government would champion transparency and settle trillions of naira in government debts owed to generation companies in order to encourage private investment.

Umoafia secured Nigeria’s fourth gold medal by dominating the men’s 71kg weightlifting category. He lifted 147kg in the snatch and matched a 172kg best in the clean and jerk for a total winning weight of 319kg, beating Samoa’s John Lautafi Tafi (silver) and Nauru’s Ezekiel Moses (bronze).

Shortly after, Didih delivered a phenomenal performance in the women’s 53kg event, shattering three Commonwealth Games records along the way. She set new records with a 93kg snatch, a 113kg clean and jerk, and a total combined lift of 206kg. India’s Gyaneshwari Yadav took silver and Canada’s Rebeka Groulx claimed bronze, bringing Team Nigeria’s overall medal count to nine (five gold and four silver).

Meanwhile, Nigerian sprinters Favour Ashe, Nicholas Fakorede, and Kanyinsola Ajayi advanced to the men’s 100m semi-finals. Ashe won his heat in 10.10 seconds, Fakorede placed second in his heat with 10.21 seconds, and Ajayi advanced automatically via a bye. Former National Coordinator and CEO of the National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA), Halima Shehu, has strongly refuted claims that she embezzled ₦44 billion, speaking during an interview on Arise News. Having previously helped establish the ministry and worked on the Conditional Cash Transfer Programme, Shehu noted that she resumed office on October 18, 2023, with a deep understanding of its operations and historical finances. During her tenure, she spearheaded major transparency initiatives, including digitizing the Conditional Cash Transfer Programme in partnership with the World Bank and opening over 1.9 million accounts to integrate the informal sector. She also highlighted her political contributions as the National Director for the Social and Humanitarian Directorate of the Tinubu-Shettima campaign, where she mobilized millions of votes through grassroots empowerment networks.

Upon taking charge at NSIPA, however, Shehu stated that she uncovered systemic issues:

“When I got to office… I discovered weak financial controls. Money was being touched without accountability. So I began to do my own audit. I also called the attention of the minister, who was my boss, Betta Edu. I also called the attention of the permanent secretary… to see how such movement of funds could be accounted for and to let the minister know that, under the mandate of NSIPA, she didn’t have any right to be touching the funds the way she was touching them.”

Shehu further alleged that Minister Betta Edu bypassed her authority by illegally appointing over 10 officials into NSIPA and instructing these programme managers to report exclusively to the minister rather than the agency’s CEO. According to Shehu, substantial financial transactions completely bypassed her office without her consent, knowledge, or approval, compounded by a total lack of official communication or response from the minister’s office.
