Senator Mpigi passed away at 64 in London last Thursday following a brief illness.
According to a statement by Wike’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, the minister was accompanied to London by his two sons, Jordan and Joaquin; Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule; Senators Magnus Abe, Allwell Onyesoh, and Olaka Nwogu; as well as Rivers State PDP Chairman Aaron Chukwuemeka, Felix Nweke, Kenneth Chikere, and Dum Deekor.
Describing the late senator as “a dependable ally who stood by his friends, even during trying times,” Wike said Mpigi’s death was a profound loss not only for the Ogoni people but for the entire nation.
He said,
“We are here as a delegation sent by the leader of Rivers State. Some senior leaders like Chief Ferdinand Alabraba, Chief OCJ Okocha, and Sergeant Awuse could not join due to their age. We were asked to come and see you before you return home.
“None of us knows the day we will meet our maker, but what we do know is that your husband tried his best. He was strong, and you, as a supportive partner, stood by him.
“I was council chairman alongside your husband, and I can personally attest to the impact Barinada Mpigi had in Rivers State politics. When he called someone a friend, he meant it. He stood by his allies through thick and thin.
“It is a great loss that we need him most at this time, but God’s plan is beyond us. We pray for strength for all of you, just as we seek strength to bear this irreparable loss, which affects not only Ogoni people and Rivers State but the entire nation.”
Wike also pledged that the delegation would support Senator Mpigi’s widow, Patricia Obiageri Mpigi, and her children, and ensure that the late senator receives a befitting burial.
“We will not forget Bari. We will stand by you and ensure he is accorded a proper farewell. On behalf of the leaders of Rivers State, we say: take heart and remain strong,” Wike said.
In response, Patricia Mpigi thanked the minister for his unwavering support, saying, “I am grateful for your presence and assistance. All I can say is thank you for everything you have done.”
