Super Eagles Legends Warn As Foreign-Born Talents Line Up To Switch Allegiance.

Former Nigerian internationals have called for caution as more foreign-born players pledge allegiance to the Super Eagles, stressing that selection must remain strictly on merit.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Ex-Super Eagles stars Emmanuel Amuneke, Etim Esin and Azubuike Egwuekwe urged head coach Eric Chelle and the Nigeria Football Federation to strike a balance, warning against neglecting home-grown talents while scouting abroad.

Chelle has already secured commitments from defenders Felix Agu and Ryan Alebiosu, along with Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo. Discussions are reportedly ongoing with other eligible players, while Rangers defender Emmanuel Fernandez, born in London to Nigerian parents, has also declared for Nigeria.

Acknowledging the growing interest from dual-national players, Chelle maintained that only those who fit into his tactical plans and can strengthen competition within the squad would be considered.

Amuneke, the 1994 African Footballer of the Year, emphasised the need to prioritise grassroots development.

“The focus should not only be on foreign-born players. We must be selective and continue developing talents at home because they are the backbone of the team,” he said.

Esin attributed the perceived edge of foreign-based players to better infrastructure and training conditions abroad, insisting that home-based players would thrive if given similar support.

Egwuekwe warned that sidelining domestic league players undermines the credibility of Nigerian football.

“When you consistently overlook home-based players, it sends the message that Nigeria has no viable league. Including a few NPFL players in the squad can boost the league and inspire upcoming talents,” he noted, recalling how local players played key roles in past successes, including the 2013 AFCON triumph under the late Stephen Keshi.

At the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, where Nigeria finished third, the squad featured several dual-nationality players, including Semi Ajayi, Calvin Bassey, Alex Iwobi, Ademola Lookman and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.

Bolarinwa Abiodun, a convicted fake Nigerian Army general, was reportedly hospitalized following an alleged physical assault by correctional officers at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre in Lagos.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

  • According to an insider source, prison warders entered Bolarinwa’s cell while he was asleep, woke him up suddenly, and pushed him to the ground, causing him to fall.

  • Following the alleged altercation, he was rushed to the Military Hospital on Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, for medical attention and theatre evaluation.

  • A family source corroborated that relatives were later informed of the incident, claiming that Bolarinwa reported being severely beaten and subjected to physical abuse during a search for a mobile phone.

  • The family source also expressed deep safety concerns, alleging that this incident follows several previous attempts on his life.

Background on Conviction

Bolarinwa has been serving a prison sentence following his initial remand in April 2022 by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

  • He was arraigned before Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of the Special Offences Court in Ikeja on a 13-count charge encompassing forgery, possession of false documents, and obtaining money by false pretences amounting to ₦266.5 million.

  • The EFCC stated that Bolarinwa deceived Kodef Clearing Resources Limited by posing as a military general and claiming that former President Muhammadu Buhari had shortlisted him for appointment as Chief of Army Staff, extracting large sums to “facilitate” the role.

  • Investigators also recovered forged appointment letters, military identification cards, recommendations bearing former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s name, and several firearms from his Alagbado residence.

  • Although he initially pleaded not guilty, Bolarinwa changed his plea to “guilty” during court proceedings on July 7, 2022.

  • Justice Taiwo convicted him on all 13 counts, sentencing him to seven years’ imprisonment without the option of a fine, ordering asset forfeitures, and directing him to pay ₦20 million in restitution.
