Just In: Stop Unwarranted Outrage Over Electoral Act, Presidency Knocks Opposition.

The Presidency has urged opposition parties to stop what it called “constant lamentation and unwarranted outrage” over the recently amended Electoral Act and the administration of President Bola Tinubu.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement released on February 26, 2026, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, accused opposition parties—particularly the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP)—of making “reckless and spurious allegations” against the APC-led Federal Government.

Onanuga claimed that opposition figures, allegedly collaborating with some civil society groups, had launched a sustained campaign of misinformation against both the National Assembly and the government. He said the opposition was attempting to “impose their will on Nigerians and the legislature,” stressing that the National Assembly is the constitutionally empowered arm responsible for lawmaking.

Defending the amendment, the Presidency said the law facilitates real-time transmission of election results while retaining Form EC8A as a backup in case of network failure.

“The opposition’s claim that Form EC8A creates a loophole for manipulation is illogical and a needless tantrum by those who should know better,” Onanuga stated. He added that network glitches are a practical challenge and that the 2026 Electoral Act does not prohibit electronic transmission; it merely stipulates that results recorded on Form EC8A remain valid if transmission fails.

Onanuga also clarified that INEC’s IReV portal is for public viewing of uploaded results, not a collation centre. “The primary source for validating election results remains Form EC8,” he noted.

The statement also addressed opposition criticism of the reintroduction of direct primaries and consensus voting for candidate selection. Onanuga described it as “perplexing” that opposition parties would reject direct primaries while favouring the delegate system.

“The opposition should be grateful to the National Assembly for removing delegate-based primaries and restoring party ownership to its members,” he said, adding that no aspirant should fear participation by party members in primaries—a system modeled after the United States’ presidential process.

Responding to claims that President Tinubu intends to turn Nigeria into a one-party state, Onanuga dismissed the allegations as “cheap shots,” stressing that Nigeria is a vibrant multiparty democracy with more than a dozen registered parties, including ADC and NNPP.

He accused opposition leaders of being disorganised and of blaming others for their own shortcomings. “President Tinubu is a democrat—an opposition leader who, with like-minded colleagues, led the charge to defeat the PDP in 2015,” the statement read.

Onanuga maintained that the new Electoral Act is a major improvement over the repealed law, closing loopholes that could be exploited for manipulation. He accused opposition leaders of exaggerating the amendment’s impact and spreading misinformation to incite public outrage.

“In summary, the opposition is merely crying foul because the rules of the game have been adjusted to prevent manipulation,” he said, urging the ADC and NNPP to focus on strengthening their parties rather than engaging in unnecessary outcry.

Describing politics as a reciprocal process, Wike stressed that the era of empty promises was over:

“Leaders must demonstrate their commitment to delivering good governance. You cannot make promises during elections and vanish afterward without fulfilling them. We asked you to support Tinubu, starting with the area council elections. On February 21, you came through, delivering 133 of the 135 polling units in the council for Tinubu. What more can we say but thank you? You have done your part; we will now do ours. Abaji people have spoken, and they spoke decisively,” he said.
