The Lagos State Coroner Court has opened an inquest into the death of Master Nkanu Adichie-Esege, son of internationally acclaimed author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, who passed away on January 7, 2026, during medical treatment.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The preliminary session took place on February 25, 2026, before Magistrate Atinuke Adetunji at Court 4, Magistrate Court, Yaba.

At the start of proceedings, Magistrate Adetunji expressed condolences to the family and explained that the inquest is inquisitorial, aiming to determine the circumstances of the child’s death and to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Lead counsel for the family, Prof. Kemi Pinheiro (SAN), accepted the condolences and pledged the family’s full cooperation. He emphasized that the inquiry must carefully review medical records to establish whether medical errors—including negligence, improper monitoring, incorrect drug administration such as Propofol, misdiagnosis, or inappropriate treatment protocols—contributed to the child’s death.

On behalf of the family, Prof. Pinheiro requested that the coroner order the production of essential materials, including:

  • CCTV footage from Euracare Hospital

  • Qualifications of attending doctors

  • Anaesthesia charts and monitoring logs

  • Complete electronic medical records

He also stated that the family plans to call expert witnesses, including an anaesthesiologist, paediatrician, intensivist, radiologist, and the child’s father.

The Lagos State Attorney General’s Office, represented by Adebola Araba, expressed support for the inquest. Representatives from Euracare and Atlantis Paediatric Hospital confirmed their readiness to participate fully in the proceedings.

The coroner raised concerns over the absence of an autopsy report. Prof. Pinheiro cited Section 21(1) of the Coroner Systems Law, which permits an inquest to proceed even without an autopsy. The coroner accepted this legal position, noting no objections, though counsel from the Attorney General’s office mentioned that an autopsy would typically be preferred.

Regarding the order of testimony, Prof. Pinheiro suggested that the hospitals present evidence first, followed by the family’s rebuttal. The coroner approved this sequence as follows:

  1. Euracare Hospital

  2. The Adichie family

  3. Atlantis Paediatric Hospital

All testimonies are to be documented in written witness statements and exchanged prior to the next hearing.

Prof. Pinheiro also requested that the family be allowed to participate virtually. The court indicated willingness to consider this request pending a formal application and payment of required fees, though recordings of proceedings will not be permitted.

The case has been adjourned to April 14 and May 5, 2026, for the continuation of hearings.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.

The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.

Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.

He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.
