Tommy Schaefer was sentenced to 18 years for the murder of Sheila von Wiese Mack, the mother of his girlfriend Heather Mack, during a luxury vacation on the island. Indonesian authorities said he was put on a flight to the United States from Bali International Airport on Tuesday evening after completing his sentence and earning reductions for good behaviour, according to FeluciaSengky Ratna, head of Bali’s Regional Office of the Directorate General of Immigration.

Police found the 62-year-old von Wiese Mack’s beaten body inside a taxi trunk at the St. Regis Bali Resort in August 2014. Mack, then 18 and pregnant, and Schaefer, 21, were arrested the following day.

Heather Mack served seven years in an Indonesian prison and was deported in October 2021 after receiving a 10-year sentence for aiding in her mother’s murder. Upon returning to the U.S., she was prosecuted again, and in January 2024, a Chicago court sentenced her to 26 years after she admitted helping kill her mother and packing the body into a suitcase.
