FA Punishes Chelsea, West Ham Over Mass Confrontation In Premier League Clash.

Chelsea FC and West Ham United FC have been hit with substantial fines following the heated scenes that erupted during their Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge in January.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Football Association (FA) confirmed that Chelsea has been fined £325,000, while West Ham must pay £300,000, after both clubs admitted charges connected to a mass confrontation in stoppage time.

The incident occurred deep into added time when Chelsea forward Joao Pedro reacted angrily after being shoved by West Ham winger Adama Traore near Blues defender Marc Cucurella. Within seconds, players from both teams converged in chaotic scenes near the corner flag.

Following a VAR review, referee Anthony Taylor issued a straight red card to West Ham defender Jean-Clair Todibo for grabbing Joao Pedro by the neck.

The FA stated: “It was alleged that Chelsea FC failed to ensure its players did not behave in an improper and/or provocative way around the 95th minute. It was also alleged that West Ham United FC failed to ensure its players did not behave in an improper and/or provocative and/or violent way at this time. Both clubs subsequently admitted the charges against them.”

An independent regulatory commission described the episode as “a serious incident,” noting that several Chelsea players were involved, and that Cucurella was not entirely blameless.

“It was not accepted that Mr Cucurella was wholly without fault. He was aware of his actions after conceding the corner kick and returning to his feet,” the commission explained. “He sought to invite a reaction from Mr Traore, though this does not justify Traore’s disproportionate response, which triggered the mass confrontation. Additionally, three Chelsea players were observed trying to incite the crowd during and at the end of the incident.”

The commission concluded that both clubs contributed to the confrontation, highlighting Traore’s excessive reaction as the catalyst. While Todibo’s conduct was deemed violent, no other West Ham player was found guilty of violent behaviour. However, several West Ham players were judged to have acted improperly and provocatively, escalating the incident.

The altercation overshadowed an intense match in which Chelsea came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 with a stoppage-time goal from Enzo Fernandez.

In deciding the fines, the commission took into account both clubs’ previous breaches of FA Rule E20.1, which forbids conduct that is “improper, offensive, violent, threatening, abusive, indecent, insulting or provocative.”

The penalties serve as a strong warning to both London clubs as the Premier League season approaches its critical stages.

Dr Dunkwu, who served until March 7, 2026, as Deputy Chief of Staff (Legislative) to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has been at the centre of growing concerns within his community over the circumstances surrounding his passing.

The community dismissed reports suggesting that burial arrangements had already been concluded, describing them as false and misleading amid rising suspicions about how he died.

This position was contained in a joint statement issued by the Obi of Ute Okpu Kingdom, the Elders-in-Council, traditional chiefs, youth groups, the Uwizimas, and members of the Dunkwu family led by Chief Augustine Dunkwu.

Community leaders called on relevant authorities, including the Nigeria Police, the Ministry of Health, and other government agencies, to urgently ensure an independent medical examination is carried out.

They emphasised that no burial date has been fixed, stressing that burial will remain on hold until a full autopsy is completed to establish the true cause of death.

According to the statement, the decision was based on cultural, legal, and emotional considerations, noting that the circumstances surrounding the death remain unclear and require proper investigation.

The community also argued that an autopsy is necessary to ensure accountability and prevent similar incidents in the future, insisting that any wrongdoing must not go unaddressed.

Citing traditional beliefs, they maintained that their customs do not permit the burial of any person whose death is surrounded by doubt, stating that truth must precede burial rites.

On legal grounds, the statement referenced standard procedures for sudden or unexplained deaths, calling for compliance with relevant coroner laws and medical protocols that require autopsy in such cases.

The community reaffirmed its willingness to cooperate fully with investigative authorities, stressing that it is not opposing burial but insisting on due process and clarity.

They further stated that once the autopsy is concluded and findings are released, a proper and dignified burial would be conducted.

The statement ended with a unified stance from all stakeholders in Ute Okpu Kingdom: “In the interest of justice, tradition, and the safety of our people, we stand united: No autopsy, no burial.”
