Naija News reports that President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said Egbetokun submitted his resignation letter on Monday, citing family matters that require his full attention.
“The IGP resigned in a letter today, citing family issues which require his undivided attention,” Onanuga told Punch.
However, sources indicate that the resignation followed a private meeting between Egbetokun and President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday evening, during which the police chief was reportedly asked to step aside.
Egbetokun is expected to be succeeded by Tunji Disu, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police overseeing the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Alagbon, Lagos.
Egbetokun was appointed IGP on June 19, 2023, after serving as Deputy Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department. He took over from Usman Alkali Baba, whose tenure ended in September 2023 following an extension granted by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
In a related development, at least 29 senior police officers, including Deputy Inspectors-General and Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, are reportedly set to be removed from office. Sources within the Nigeria Police Force and the Police Service Commission told Sahara Reporters on Tuesday that the planned shake-up is part of a broader restructuring of police leadership.
