“‘More Tech, More Trouble’ – INEC Commissioner On Election Results Transmission”.
Muhammed Haruna, a National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has stated that technology alone cannot fully resolve the challenges faced during elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking in an interview on Trust TV on Monday, he emphasized that glitches are inevitable when using technology in elections. His remarks came in response to the recently passed and signed Electoral Amendment Act by the National Assembly and President Bola Tinubu.
Haruna highlighted the importance of gradual implementation of technology to address existing infrastructural challenges.
“There will always be glitches. Gradual implementation of technology is crucial, especially given current infrastructure limitations,” he said.
“There’s a misconception that technology is a universal solution without problems. We already face challenges transmitting basic polling unit results. Adding extra technological layers, such as aggregating all polling unit data at the ward level, would likely make these issues worse.”
Meanwhile, former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Chidi Odinkalu, expressed serious concerns over INEC’s credibility, citing flaws in the conduct of recent Federal Capital Territory (FCT) elections. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, he argued that the performance of INEC under Chairman Joash Amupitan undermines public trust in the commission’s ability to deliver credible elections in 2027.
Odinkalu described the shortcomings not as legal constraints but as failures of will and poor electoral administration. Referring to the FCT poll as a “small election,” he warned that the issues raised cast doubt on INEC’s preparedness for future polls.
“INEC failed. Amupitan’s INEC failed woefully. On this evidence, nobody can trust him to organize credible elections in 2027,” Odinkalu stated.
“No, it’s not about the law. It’s a failure of will and electoral administration. The election administrators need to do their homework. If they are unwilling, they should step aside.
“First, electoral logistics were poor. Second, the management of electoral rules was inadequate. People were reassigned to different polling units just hours before voting, with no voter education or information management. Third, violence was unacceptable. Fourth, results were altered in several locations, and collation glitched on the day. This happened in a small FCT election—it is disgraceful. Joash failed.”
