The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) has increased admission deposits for its Intensive Care Unit (ICU) from ₦500,000 to ₦1 million, prompting widespread reactions from Edo State residents.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

This adjustment marks a 100% rise in the cost of accessing critical care services at the hospital. The Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC) confirmed the change in an internal memorandum dated January 30, 2026, which also approved revised charges for ward consumables and admission deposits across the hospital.

Other new admission deposits include ₦150,000 for medical wards, ₦200,000 for private wards, ₦100,000 for day-case admissions, ₦150,000 for orthopaedic wards, ₦200,000 for neuro wards, and ₦150,000 for obstetrics and gynaecology wards.

Ward consumables have also been increased, with patients in the Labour and Emergency Complex now charged ₦20,000 per week, while ordinary wards will attract ₦15,000 per week.

The memo stated that the review was necessary due to current funding realities and the need to promote efficiency, minimize waste, and improve the maintenance and procurement of medical consumables. Under the new structure, ICU admission requires a ₦1 million deposit, and the Labour Ward Complex now requires ₦200,000. These adjustments aim to ensure sustainable hospital operations and enhance service delivery.

The announcement has generated significant reactions on social media, with residents criticizing what they describe as steep increases in hospital charges and the reported privatisation of laboratory services in the Accident and Emergency (A&E) unit.

In response, UBTH’s Head of the Public Relations and Information Unit, Osaretin Iyen, clarified that the private laboratory service at the A&E unit was introduced to supplement the hospital’s existing diagnostic facilities, not replace them.

He noted that UBTH has over ten functional laboratories, and the decision was made to enhance patient care and safety, particularly for critically ill patients requiring immediate and uninterrupted laboratory investigations.

“This is especially important given challenges faced by the UBTH laboratory in the Accident and Emergency unit,” Iyen added.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.

The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.

Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.

He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.

In the notice issued by their solicitors, Gemgold, the comedians warned members of the public against publishing or circulating allegations they described as false and defamatory against them.
