I Was Abducted From Courtroom Under Democracy – Sowore Shares Arrest Experiences.

Human rights activist and politician Omoyele Sowore has revealed that he is currently facing nine ongoing court cases initiated by the Federal Government and the police. He shared this during an appearance on Channels Television’s Inside Sources on Friday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) noted that he has experienced more arrests under Nigeria’s democratic governments than under military rule. He recalled being detained only twice during the military era but facing multiple arrests under civilian administrations.

Sowore said, “I have suffered more arrests in 2025 than I did between 1989 and 1996, when I graduated from university. I was arrested by the DSS once, maybe twice. At the University of Lagos, I was abducted and held for about two weeks. During my NYSC in Yola, I was detained for a week without a court order. Since civilian rule began, I’ve spent months in detention, including five months in DSS custody, and I was even abducted from a courtroom under democracy.”

Meanwhile, the Federal High Court in Lagos ruled on Friday that the Nigerian police acted illegally by declaring Sowore wanted in 2025. Justice Musa Kakaaki awarded ₦30 million in damages against the Nigeria Police Force, the Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, and Lagos State Commissioner of Police Moshood Jimoh for the unlawful declaration.

The court emphasized that no Nigerian can be criminalized for speaking, protesting, or holding the government accountable. Jimoh had declared Sowore wanted on November 3, 2025, for allegedly planning a protest on the Third Mainland Bridge over the demolition of settlements in Oworonshoki, Lagos. Previously, in October 2025, the police had ordered Sowore to stay away from Lagos.

Sowore challenged the declaration, seeking enforcement of his constitutional rights to dignity, liberty, freedom of movement, expression, and peaceful assembly under the Nigerian Constitution and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights. He maintained that the police acted without prior invitation, warrant, or formal charge and argued that the declaration harmed his reputation.

Through his lawyers, led by Tope Temokun, Sowore requested the court restrain the police from harassment or intimidation and initially sought ₦500 million in damages. The police opposed the suit, insisting Jimoh had the authority to declare him wanted.

At the time, Jimoh defended the action on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, claiming the declaration remained in force and alleging Sowore failed to report to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Yaba as agreed by his lawyer. He also denied claims that the IGP ordered Sowore to be “shot on sight,” describing such reports as false.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.

The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.

Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.

He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.
