FCT Polls: Ubani Calls Movement Ban “Over the Top”.
Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Monday Ubani, has criticized the extended restriction of movement imposed ahead of the Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections, calling it excessive.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Ubani made the remarks on Friday during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, responding to the movement ban that lasted from Friday night to Saturday evening.
The senior lawyer described the duration of the restriction as disproportionate, while acknowledging that security agencies might be acting on intelligence not publicly available.
“They should take another hard look at this directive. From 8 pm tonight until the following day—it honestly doesn’t make sense to me. But perhaps they have reasons we are not aware of,” he said.
Ubani noted that differences in directives issued by authorities can cause confusion, but citizens are generally inclined to follow the instructions of security agencies, as they are the primary enforcers.
“The police’s directive is slightly different, but we tend to obey them. So when there’s a conflict, the enforcers’ instructions take precedence,” he added.
He also linked the need for sweeping movement restrictions to what he described as Nigeria’s developing democratic culture, observing that elections in more advanced democracies do not disrupt normal economic activities.
“It reflects our political maturity—or lack thereof. In developed countries, people vote and return to work without shutting down the economy. Shutting down everything just to elect leaders shows a level of immaturity,” Ubani stated.
The SAN further emphasized that both political actors and citizens must commit to peaceful conduct during elections, warning that the scramble for power often fuels tension and instability in the electoral process.
