‘Declaring Sowore Wanted Illegal’, Court Awards Activist ₦30 Million.

The Federal High Court in Lagos has ruled that the Nigerian police acted illegally in declaring human rights activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, wanted in 2025.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Justice Musa Kakaaki awarded Sowore ₦30 million in damages against the Nigeria Police Force, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, and Lagos State Commissioner of Police Moshood Jimoh for unlawfully labeling him wanted.

The court held that no Nigerian can be criminalised for speaking out, protesting, or holding the government accountable.

Jimoh had on November 3, 2025, publicly declared Sowore wanted for allegedly planning a protest on the Third Mainland Bridge over demolitions in Oworonshoki, Lagos. In October 2025, he had also ordered Sowore to stay away from Lagos.

Challenging the actions, Sowore filed a suit seeking enforcement of his rights to dignity, liberty, freedom of movement, expression, and peaceful assembly under the Nigerian Constitution and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights. He argued that the police acted without a warrant, prior invitation, or formal charge, damaging his reputation and violating his constitutional rights. Sowore also sought ₦500 million in general and exemplary damages and requested an order restraining the police from harassment or intimidation.

The police contended that Jimoh had the authority to declare Sowore wanted. Speaking in November 2025, Jimoh insisted the declaration was still valid and denied claims that the IGP had ordered Sowore to be “shot on sight,” calling it misinformation.

In his judgment, Justice Kakaaki condemned the lawlessness of the police commissioner and held the IGP accountable. The court stated that a citizen can only be declared wanted with a court-issued warrant, proper notice, and evidence of evasion.

Jimoh’s October 27, 2025, order restricting Sowore from Lagos was declared arbitrary, unconstitutional, and beyond police powers. The November 3 public declaration labeling him wanted was ruled illegal, unconstitutional, and an abuse of authority.

Sowore’s lawyer, Tope Temokun, hailed the ruling as “a strong constitutional warning against abuse of state power,” noting that both the police commissioner and IGP were held accountable for their misconduct and praising the court for defending justice and constitutional governance.

Oloyede said many of the issues recorded during the mock exercise were due to poor assessment of centres by some technical officials.

He further stated that incentive packages would be awarded to teams that perform exceptionally, particularly in handling exam materials and submitting timely reports.
