Anxiety, Outrage Rock Federal Civil Service As Salary Cuts, Unpaid Arrears Bite

Published

on

Anxiety and frustration are mounting within the Federal Civil Service as employees across ministries, departments and agencies contend with unexplained salary cuts, outstanding arrears and a lack of clear communication from the Federal Government.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Labour insiders cautioned that the simmering discontent could escalate into widespread industrial action if the issues are not urgently addressed.

Findings show that many federal workers have faced prolonged financial hardship due to declining monthly earnings, delayed allowances and promotion arrears dating back several years.

Several affected staff described the development as unprecedented, noting that some state governments are now reportedly paying higher wages than the Federal Government — a situation observers say has not occurred in Nigeria’s minimum wage history.

A major source of concern is the failure to issue pay slips since September 2025, leaving workers unable to monitor deductions or understand the steady drop in their take-home pay.

Employees in the Federal Ministries of Information; Labour and Employment; Agriculture; and Education, as well as agencies under them — including the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria and the Nigerian Television Authority — reported persistent monthly salary reductions without explanation.

Workers say the situation has deepened suspicion and weakened confidence in the system.

Tensions have also been heightened by the non-payment of three months’ wage award arrears, despite repeated assurances from authorities. The wage award, introduced to cushion economic hardship, has instead become another point of grievance due to delays.

Promotion arrears remain another contentious issue. Officers promoted in 2023 reportedly received only partial payments in 2024, while those elevated in 2024 and 2025 are yet to receive any arrears. In some cases, senior officials are said to be earning the same salaries as their subordinates years after promotion.

Further compounding the crisis is the suspension of the 20 per cent weighing-in allowance since August 2024, even though it is a statutory entitlement. Workers claim the allowance vanished from payrolls without prior notice.

Similarly, the 40 per cent Peculiar Allowance approved under former President Muhammadu Buhari was last paid in July 2024, with accumulated arrears still outstanding.

Organised labour sources described the atmosphere in federal offices as tense, warning that prolonged silence from the authorities could push workers toward protests.

“Morale is at its lowest. Salaries cannot be explained, promotions have lost meaning, and allowances have disappeared,” a senior civil servant said.

As dissatisfaction grows, workers are demanding transparency regarding deductions, immediate release of outstanding pay slips and swift settlement of all arrears, warning that continued inaction could disrupt service delivery across the federal public service.

Pastor Egbaji, a Nigerian cleric, was said to have endured harsh treatment during his detention, including prolonged confinement. His release followed a presidential pardon granted by the authorities in Benin Republic under President Patrice Talon.

He stated that although there was no personal connection or financial influence involved, the minister actively engaged Benin Republic authorities through diplomatic channels. According to him, her visit and negotiations played a key role in securing Pastor Egbaji’s release.

Dr. Kehinde also commended all individuals and institutions that contributed to the advocacy efforts, including Moses Eyo, Dickson Umu Unung, the Cross River State Government, CP Alobi Lawrence (rtd), Joseph Bisong Ayi, Blessing Harrison, Eze Sampson, and Rt. Hon. Legor Idagbo.

He said their combined efforts were instrumental in achieving the cleric’s freedom.

He added that while Egbaji’s release is a major relief, the cleric now faces the task of recovering and rebuilding his life after years of hardship. He called for continued support to help him reintegrate into society.

Dr. Kehinde also urged stronger government commitment to protecting Nigerian citizens abroad and enhancing diplomatic engagement across West Africa to prevent similar cases in the future.

This was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, who noted that military operations in the North-East continue to maintain strong pressure on insurgent groups.

According to him, NAF air platforms successfully engaged the targets using precision-guided munitions, destroying the structures, neutralising multiple terrorists, and dismantling key logistics facilities. This was later confirmed through battle damage assessments.

The statement added that sustained air operations have continued to weaken terrorist networks, disrupting their activities and forcing them into more defensive and unstable responses.
