‘We Will Not Release Him’ – EFCC Source Speaks On El-Rufai.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday retained former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, for a second night at its Abuja headquarters.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Reports indicate that the ex-governor could remain in detention longer if the commission secures a remand order from a competent court.
A source within the EFCC told The Nation that El-Rufai underwent additional questioning concerning his administration from 2015 to 2023.
“For hours, we asked El-Rufai to respond to statements made by his Commissioner for Finance, who had previously appeared before the EFCC. There are numerous documents he needs to review, and we will not release him yet. Plans are underway to seek an extended remand order from a court. There’s no cause for alarm, as El-Rufai has access to his lawyer and his rights are being protected,” the source said.
It was not immediately clear which of his former finance commissioners was questioned. During his tenure, Suleiman Abdu Kwari served from May 2015 to May 2019 before resigning to contest the Kaduna North Senatorial seat. Mohammad Bashir Saidu succeeded him in April 2019, having previously been the governor’s Chief of Staff.
DSS Charges, ICPC to Question Ex-Governor
Security sources revealed that the Department of State Services (DSS) is set to arraign El-Rufai over alleged phone tapping of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, filing a three-count charge at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
“The DSS wants to meet with the ex-governor ahead of his formal arraignment on a three-count charge,” a security official said.
Additionally, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) is reportedly preparing to question him over the failed ₦1.3 billion Kaduna light rail project.
El-Rufai had initially presented himself at the EFCC headquarters on Monday to answer corruption-related queries. His media aide, Muyiwa Adekeye, confirmed that the former governor fully cooperated with investigators, describing the engagement as “frank and fruitful.” Adekeye noted that EFCC officials conducted themselves professionally, though El-Rufai remained in their custody after the session.
