The Priest-in-Residence of Holy Family Catholic Church, Ologo, Enugu, Fr. Theophilus Nwodo, has called on Nigerian leaders to treat the Lenten season as a time for deep national reflection ahead of the 2027 general elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Delivering his Ash Wednesday message in Enugu, Nwodo urged political office holders and aspirants to embrace humility, justice and sincerity as Christians commence the Lenten period.

He encouraged leaders to pattern their conduct after Jesus Christ, whom he described as the perfect example of selfless and righteous leadership. According to him, if leaders truly emulate Christ’s virtues of sacrifice, truth and justice, issues such as electoral malpractice and manipulation would be avoided.

“When God appoints a leader, He prepares and directs that person. Leaders must not seek power through dishonest means,” he said.

The cleric stressed the importance of keeping campaign promises and governing with integrity, noting that manifestos should translate into concrete action once in office. “God represents truth, justice and love,” he added.

He also appealed to Nigerians to promote unity, cooperation and genuine care for one another, stating that meaningful national development can only be achieved through collective responsibility.

Nwodo urged citizens to remain prayerful and hopeful, expressing confidence that commitment to justice, mercy and good leadership would transform Nigeria and inspire future generations.

Describing Lent as a sacred season of reflection, repentance and spiritual renewal, he explained that Ash Wednesday serves as a reminder of human mortality and the need for humility before God.

“Ash Wednesday reminds us that we are dust and to dust we shall return. The ash symbolises humility and simplicity of heart. When you humble yourself, God will lift you up,” he said.

He further called on Christians to use the season for self-examination, seek forgiveness and strive to build a better future, emphasising the need to extend the love and mercy received from God to others.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the 40-day Lenten season of prayer, fasting and repentance leading to Easter.

According to the source, the twins maintained a daily routine of speaking around midnight, but the conversation took a sudden turn that night when unusual activity was noticed at the General’s end.

He said the line went dead abruptly after the General paused during the call, apparently due to the unfolding situation at the base.

The twin brother reportedly made repeated attempts to reconnect, sending messages and calling continuously, but received no response throughout the night.

“He kept trying until about 4 am, but there was no answer,” the source said.

The family later confirmed the tragedy after a senior military officer contacted them around 6:30 am, informing them that the base had come under attack and that the Brigade Commander was among those killed.

The relative described the incident as devastating, noting that communication had broken down during the assault.
