In a statement signed by his Media Adviser, Ikechukwu Eze, Jonathan said his comments at the 50th anniversary memorial of Murtala Mohammed were taken out of context.

According to the statement, the former President did not advocate a fixed age cap for leadership but encouraged broader generational inclusion. Speaking at the event, he reflected on how Murtala Mohammed assumed office at 36, using it as a reference point to stress the value of youth participation in governance.

Jonathan also cited examples of leaders who held office at relatively young ages, including Olusegun Obasanjo, Yakubu Gowon, and Alfred Diete-Spiff, to highlight the historic impact of younger leaders.

Eze explained that the message was centered on competence, innovation, capacity, and the energy required for public service — not on excluding older individuals from leadership roles.

He expressed hope that the clarification would clear up any misunderstanding surrounding the former President’s speech.
