Bayelsa APC Ward Congress: Sagbama, Southern Ijaw Leaders Reject Zoning Arrangement.

Published

on

Ahead of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ward congresses scheduled for February 18–21, party stakeholders in Bayelsa State have accused the leadership of disregarding the consensus arrangement previously directed by Governor Douye Diri.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Diri, who joined the APC from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) last October, is now tasked with uniting the party as its state leader. The national APC leadership fixed Wednesday, February 18, for the ward congresses, while exercises at local government levels are slated for Friday, February 20, 2026.

Sylva’s Loyalists Raise Alarm
Supporters of former Governor Timipre Sylva allege that they are being marginalized ahead of the congresses. The group, claiming to be the original APC members who contributed to President Bola Tinubu’s 2023 election victory and other party successes since 2015, say undue advantages are being given to those who defected alongside Governor Diri.

They warned that such “irregularities” could undermine party unity in the state. Sylva, a founding figure and former face of opposition politics in Bayelsa, has been at odds with the government, previously accusing some actors of attempting to destabilize the APC-led federal administration.

EFCC Investigation
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been probing Sylva over alleged financial misconduct, which he has consistently denied. Party sources say the investigation has weakened Sylva’s influence, leaving his loyalists politically isolated ahead of the congresses.

Sagbama, Southern Ijaw Stakeholders Reject Arrangements
In Sagbama Local Government Area, party stakeholders and ward executives have reportedly rejected the arrangements set for the conduct of the ward congresses.

Similarly, in the Bomo clan of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, a socio-political group, the Bomo Mandate Forum, opposed an alleged zoning plan for the APC chairmanship in the council. The forum rejected what it described as a decision reserving the chairmanship for Constituency Three.

In a statement from Yenagoa, the forum’s Chairman, Chief Elder Dominic Richard Bafagha, and Secretary, Chief James Jonah-Alu, called the resolution a “kangaroo arrangement,” alleging it was imposed by a few individuals without the consent of key local stakeholders.
