US Civil Rights Leader Jesse Jackson Is Dead.

Veteran U.S. civil rights leader Reverend Jesse Jackson has passed away at the age of 84, his family announced on Tuesday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

“Our father was a servant leader—not only to our family, but to the oppressed, the voiceless, and the overlooked around the world. His unwavering belief in justice, equality, and love uplifted millions. We ask that you honor his memory by continuing the fight for the values he lived by,” the family said in a statement.

Born in 1941 and raised in the segregated American South, Jackson rose to prominence during the civil rights movement of the 1960s, becoming a close associate of Martin Luther King Jr. He dedicated his life to advocating for racial equality, social justice, and the rights of marginalized communities.

A powerful orator and media-savvy activist, Jackson remained one of America’s most recognized civil rights figures, despite controversies during his career. He ran for the Democratic presidential nomination twice, in 1984 and 1988. In 1984, he captured roughly 3.3 million votes—about 18% of ballots in Democratic contests—finishing third behind Walter Mondale and Gary Hart. His campaign suffered a setback after private remarks about Jewish people and New York were made public.

By 1988, Jackson had become a more polished candidate, winning 11 state primaries and caucuses, mostly in the South, and receiving 6.8 million votes (29% of ballots), finishing second to Michael Dukakis. Though he never held elected office, his campaigns were historic, paving the way for future Black presidential contenders, including Barack Obama.

Jackson founded Chicago-based civil rights organizations Operation PUSH and the National Rainbow Coalition, broadening his advocacy to include economic justice and political empowerment. He also served as special envoy to Africa under President Bill Clinton, negotiating the release of Americans and others detained abroad in countries such as Syria, Cuba, Iraq, and Serbia.

Renowned for his electrifying speeches, Jackson delivered one of his most memorable addresses at the 1988 Democratic National Convention in Atlanta:

“America is not a blanket woven from one thread, one colour, one cloth. Wherever you are tonight, you can make it. Hold your head high, stick your chest out. You can make it. It gets dark sometimes, but the morning comes. Don’t you surrender. Suffering breeds character, character breeds faith. In the end, faith will not disappoint.”

In 2017, at age 76, Jackson revealed he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, a movement disorder causing tremors, stiffness, and balance challenges, noting that he had experienced symptoms for three years prior.

He noted that his administration still has about a year and one month left in office, adding that attention should remain on governance and ongoing development plans.

Makinde said, “So this administration will come to an end in one year and one month. So what will happen next? Well, that is if I am not impeached then.”

He explained that two committees were inaugurated during the event — one for the International Tourism Summit Oyo State 2026 and another for a 25-Year Tourism Master Plan aimed at guiding long-term development in the state.
