Osafile Stella, the sole opposition member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has revealed that she has faced ridicule after leaving the Labour Party for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), rather than joining the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Stella spoke to journalists following Monday’s plenary session, acknowledging that criticism has been persistent but not unexpected. She noted that political life demands resilience.

“Of course, there are taunts, but in politics you must develop a thick skin. Without that, it is difficult to move forward,” she said.

The lawmaker explained that holding public office naturally attracts scrutiny and differing opinions, emphasizing that criticism is an inherent part of democratic engagement.

Addressing speculation that her move to the ADC was motivated by a guaranteed return ticket for the next election, Stella insisted her decision was guided by the interests of her constituents. She stressed that the ADC is a well-established party with long-standing structures.

“The ADC is well established. The structures are there. My people encouraged me to take this step. It was the constituents I represent who asked me to move to the ADC,” she said.

On the intersection of religion and governance, Stella highlighted Nigeria’s secular system, noting that political participation transcends faith lines.

“Your personality will always reflect in how you play politics. After God’s authority comes government, so you cannot distance yourself from it,” she said.

Chairing the House Committee on Wealth Creation and Employment, Stella also dismissed claims that her opposition status has led to discrimination within the Assembly. She praised Speaker Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa for his professionalism and impartial leadership.

“When I campaigned, I emphasized capacity, competence, and character. I believe the Speaker understands his role and assigns responsibilities appropriately. I have not experienced any form of discrimination. Beyond party politics, he is committed to governance. He has given me the space to function and consistently sets aside party differences to uphold the Constitution,” she added.

The state Commissioner of Police, Patrick Daaor, disclosed that the suspect and the deceased initially connected online and developed a friendship after communicating for several months.

According to Daaor, Samuel later invited the woman to his residence in the Ahor area of Benin City, where he allegedly stabbed her to death with a knife.

The police commissioner stated that the suspect had been taken into custody and would be charged in court after investigations were concluded.

However, Samuel has offered a different account of the incident, claiming that the woman was injured during a struggle over a knife following an argument between them.

Speaking in an interview, the 21-year-old insisted that he did not intend to kill her.

“I didn’t mean to kill her, but she got injured in the process of struggling with her for the knife during an argument,” he said.

The suspect explained that he had met the woman on social media and that their friendship developed over several months of online conversations before she decided to visit him.

He said they were initially having a discussion at his residence, but the conversation eventually escalated into an argument.

“On the day she came to my house, we were discussing, but the discussion snowballed into an argument. In the process, she picked up a knife and intended to stab me,” he claimed.

Samuel further alleged that the woman sustained an injury to her neck while they were struggling over the knife.

He maintained that he attempted to save her after she was injured but was unable to prevent her death.

“I didn’t mean to kill her. I tried to save her after she was injured, but she died,” he said.

The police are expected to conclude their investigation before proceeding with the case in court.
