Lagos Govt To Reinstate Monthly Environmental Sanitation From March .

Published

on

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to restore its compulsory monthly environmental sanitation exercise, set to resume on the last Saturday of every month starting March 2025.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The government also expressed satisfaction with ongoing Lagos Island regeneration and flood control projects, while urging residents to embrace personal responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean instead of relying solely on enforcement measures.

The disclosure was made by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, during an inspection of regeneration projects and environmental violations on Lagos Island. He was accompanied by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Kunle Rotimi-Akodu.

Wahab explained that the sanitation programme, traditionally observed between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. on the last Saturday of each month, was halted in November 2016 due to challenges enforcing movement restrictions in a densely populated city. However, he noted that rising issues such as indiscriminate waste disposal, blocked drains and mounting refuse heaps have made its reinstatement necessary.

Although earlier plans to relaunch the exercise were delayed by logistical constraints, he said consultations with stakeholders are ongoing to ensure a smooth rollout. He expressed confidence that the exercise would begin in March or possibly earlier.

The commissioner attributed much of Lagos’ environmental problems to poor civic behaviour rather than inadequate waste management systems. He warned that markets along major roads, despite having access to waste disposal facilities, continue to contribute to illegal dumping, adding that stricter enforcement would be introduced in critical areas.

On the Lagos Island regeneration project, Wahab assured residents that drainage improvements and public space upgrades were progressing steadily, with noticeable reductions in flooding in several vulnerable locations.

Officials also inspected the Oja-Oba underbridge, slated for redevelopment through a public-private partnership arrangement. Clearing work is ongoing, while discussions with prospective partners continue, with the project expected to be executed in phases.

Wahab stressed that environmental sanitation should not be viewed solely as a government initiative, encouraging residents to dedicate time regularly to cleaning their surroundings.

He revealed that the decision to reinstate the monthly sanitation exercise followed extensive deliberations by the Lagos State Executive Council, with legal input from the Ministry of Justice. According to him, previous legal concerns centred on movement restrictions rather than the sanitation activity itself, and those issues have now been addressed.

He concluded by emphasising that environmental sanitation remains a global best practice and that Lagos must foster a sustainable culture of cleanliness to promote public health and orderly urban development.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.

The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.

Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.

He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.

Meanwhile, comedians Ayobami Ajewole, popularly known as Woli Agba, and Olamide Oladimeji, also known as Dele Omo Woli, have threatened legal action against individuals allegedly linking them to Toluwanisings’ death.

Woli Agba disclosed this in a public notice shared on his Instagram page on Sunday.

In the notice issued by their solicitors, Gemgold, the comedians warned members of the public against publishing or circulating allegations they described as false and defamatory against them.
