Lagos Fire Service Explains Why Fire Outbreaks Can’t Be Fully Prevented.

Published

on

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has stated that while fire outbreaks remain a recurring challenge in the state, they cannot be completely eradicated. However, their occurrence can be significantly reduced through collective responsibility, strict adherence to safety measures, and active community involvement.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The announcement was made during the inauguration of the Fire Marshal Club and a Safety Walk aimed at raising public awareness and strengthening grassroots participation in fire prevention and emergency response.

The awareness walk began at the Service Headquarters in Alausa, Ikeja, proceeded to the Ikeja Fire Station, and returned to the headquarters. The exercise sought to educate residents on fire safety practices and encourage communities to take proactive steps in preventing fire incidents.

Speaking at the event, Controller General of the Service, Margaret Adeseye, acknowledged that fire incidents remain a concern but noted a slight reduction in cases between 2024 and 2025. She said, “Fire outbreaks may not be totally eliminated, but they can be drastically minimised if everyone takes responsibility, complies with safety measures, and actively participates in prevention efforts.”

Adeseye explained that the Fire Marshal system is a globally recognised, community-based volunteer structure designed to strengthen fire prevention and emergency preparedness at the local level. She noted that the establishment of Fire Marshal Clubs in markets, commercial centres, and neighbourhoods across Lagos would significantly enhance early response and public awareness.

“The Fire Marshal Club will serve as a critical support structure for the Service. Members will be trained and equipped with the knowledge to prevent fire outbreaks and respond effectively in emergencies,” she said, adding that empowering residents through training would bridge the gap between emergency responders and communities, especially in densely populated areas.

Also addressing the event, General Manager of the Lagos State Command and Control Centre, Femi Giwa, emphasized the importance of strong inter-agency collaboration in emergency management. He highlighted that the Fire Marshal initiative aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Plus Agenda, with trained Fire Marshals acting as first responders and essential links between communities and emergency services.

“Fire Marshals will ensure timely communication with emergency responders, particularly through designated toll-free emergency numbers,” Giwa said.

Fire safety expert Dr. Julius Agbo also praised the initiative, describing it as a strategic support system for the state government’s emergency response framework. He noted that research shows approximately 95% of fire incidents are caused by unsafe human actions, highlighting the importance of continuous public education and behaviour change.

“This initiative is timely and necessary. Preventing fires starts with changing human behaviour, and sustained public awareness is critical to achieving that,” he said.

According to the Service, the inauguration of the Fire Marshal Club represents another major step by the Lagos State Government in safeguarding lives and property through prevention, partnership, and improved emergency response.

Shehu questioned the possible impact of the funding gap on troop safety, suggesting it could be linked to growing battlefield casualties.

He also raised concerns about reported cases of soldiers abandoning their posts, implying that insufficient equipment and support may be contributing factors.

The commentator further asked what had become of funds borrowed in the name of addressing insecurity, calling for accountability in their use.

Ufochukwu also noted that her agenda extends beyond trade, including the promotion of Nigeria’s culture, agriculture, and investment opportunities, as well as supporting training programmes in cybersecurity and information technology.

She assured stakeholders of her commitment to fully delivering on her responsibilities, adding that sustained communication and cooperation would be important in achieving set goals.

Participants at the forum highlighted the need for Nigeria to address structural barriers affecting business growth, while pointing to Israel’s innovation-driven economy as a model worth studying.

One of the attendees, Pastor Henry Opara, called for formal bilateral agreements, stressing that most current business interactions between both countries are informal and based on personal relationships rather than structured government frameworks.

He argued that stronger government-to-government agreements would provide clearer rules and more stable economic engagement.

Similarly, the National Coordinator of the Nigeria–Israel Business Forum, Mrs. Florence Osuji, urged both countries to renew official trade agreements, noting that some existing arrangements have expired, leaving current trade relations without strong institutional backing.
