Saturday PUNCH reports that in the past six days, threat letters were delivered to four communities, warning of imminent attacks. On Thursday, one such letter was dropped in Ira, a community linking Inaja and Aho towns in Oyun Local Government Area.

The terrorists had previously sent a similar letter to Dunshigogo in Kaiama LGA, a few days after the February 3 attack on Woro town, which left over 176 people dead and 38 abducted.

Residents Flee Over Threats

Residents of Ira, Inaja, and Aho have begun leaving their homes in response to the warning letters. One letter, signed by “The Writer (SANUFH),” stated:

“This message is from Nigeria Terrorist Association, NTA. Our motor: we kill, we kidnapping, and destroying… Be ready for us at any time any date… we left Kaiama, we move to Ira, Inaja, Aho and towns around.”

The letter’s authenticity has not yet been verified.

Ira, bordering Ilemona, lies along a corridor linking several rural settlements considered vulnerable due to their proximity to forested areas. A traditional chief in Ira, speaking anonymously for safety reasons, said the letter was dropped at a motorcycle park near the central mosque.

“Stop Waiting For Power — Serve First,” Abiola Challenges Nigerian Youths.

According to the chief, the letter was discovered around 2:30–3:00 pm by motorbike riders and quickly taken to the king’s palace. Security agencies, including DSS, police, and NSCDC, began patrolling the area by 5:00 pm. Despite the security presence, fear has gripped residents, prompting some to temporarily relocate.

“This is the first time we are witnessing something like this. People are afraid and have moved to nearby towns,” the chief said, noting that local vigilantes are away for forest guard training and urging government support.

Traditional Leaders Seek Intervention

The Oninaja of Inaja, Oba Wahab Oyetoro, confirmed that the letter heightened tension and forced some residents to flee. A security meeting of traditional rulers and the LGA chairman was convened to map out protective strategies.

The National Secretary of the Ira Descendants Union, Yekini Olarewaju, said the letter disrupted normal life: schools remained closed, farmers abandoned their fields, and businesses shut down. He added that residents had appealed to government authorities and security agencies for urgent assistance.

Security Agencies on High Alert

The Kwara State Police Command, through spokesperson Ejire Adetoun-Adeyemi, confirmed receiving the letter and said intelligence units are investigating its source. Additional patrols have been deployed in collaboration with vigilantes. A senior DSS officer and a military source confirmed that all security agencies are on operational alert, with the Nigerian Army’s Forward Operating Base in Ilemona intensifying patrols.

LGA Chairman Calls Emergency Meeting

The Chairman of Oyun LGA, Akanbi Olarewaju, convened an emergency security meeting attended by security agencies, traditional rulers, and stakeholders to address the threats.

The Chief Press Secretary, Owodunni Adekunle, emphasized proactive steps for public safety, urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements or unfamiliar faces across Oyun LGA.

He further stated that incentive packages would be awarded to teams that perform exceptionally, particularly in handling exam materials and submitting timely reports.
