The House of Representatives has fixed an emergency sitting for Tuesday, February 17, to deliberate on issues arising from the 2027 General Election timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The development was disclosed in a statement issued by House spokesperson, Akin Rotimi.

According to the statement, members of the green chamber were formally informed of the session through an internal memo circulated by the Office of the Speaker late Friday. The House stressed the constitutional and national significance of the matter, noting the urgency of legislative intervention.

It explained that the emergency sitting underscores lawmakers’ determination to swiftly address matters with significant implications for Nigeria’s democratic process. The statement added that the session aligns with the constitutional responsibilities of the National Assembly and urged members to ensure full attendance.

“All legislative business relating to the matter will be treated with urgency. Honourable Members are strongly encouraged to prioritise attendance, considering the weight of the issues before the House,” the statement read.

The House also reiterated its commitment to strengthening democratic institutions through proactive and responsible lawmaking in the interest of Nigerians.

Recall that INEC on Friday unveiled the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general election. According to the commission, Presidential and National Assembly elections are slated for February 20, 2027, while Governorship and State Assembly polls will take place on March 6, 2027.

Meanwhile, some stakeholders have urged the electoral body to reconsider the dates, citing concerns that parts of the schedule may overlap with the Ramadan fasting period and could affect inclusiveness.
