Even The President Cannot Tell Me What To Do – El-Rufai Recounts DSS Airport Incident.
Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has recounted the episode at Abuja International Airport that nearly led to his arrest.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking on Channels Television, El-Rufai alleged that security agencies are being used for political purposes against opposition figures.
He claimed that the Department of State Services (DSS) attempted to detain him without a warrant upon his return from Cairo, despite prior communication with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
El-Rufai said he was approached by a DSS officer but insisted that even the President could not compel him to comply without due process.
“I came out of the plane, and a young man in a suit approached me and said, ‘I am from the DSS. I would like to meet you in our office.’ I asked, ‘Where is the letter of invitation?’ He replied, ‘My bosses have it. I’ll escort you.’ I told him, ‘I’m going through immigration. Just show me the letter,’” he recounted.
He said more operatives appeared as he walked toward immigration, but he refused to follow them without a formal letter.
“They said, ‘We are from the DSS, sir, we need to go to your office.’ I said, ‘I’m not going anywhere without a letter of invitation.’ Even the President cannot tell me to do anything I don’t wish to. It’s a free and democratic country. Your position doesn’t change that,” El-Rufai added.
He said he passed through immigration, got his passport stamped, and left the airport. He alleged that DSS operatives later assaulted one of his aides and seized the aide’s passport.
“That’s the aide who got beaten and had his passport taken. If I had the passport with me, I wouldn’t even be speaking about this,” he said.
El-Rufai also expressed appreciation for what he described as spontaneous support from other passengers, warning of broader consequences:
“Once people lose confidence in the neutrality of such institutions, we are heading toward anarchy.”
