What was meant to be a carefully staged opening quickly turned dramatic shortly after noon. Thousands of the estimated 40,000 registered fishermen, brimming with excitement, surged into the river ahead of the formal ceremony and before the arrival of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Spectators who had arrived as early as 7:00 a.m. watched in awe as the spontaneous dash unfolded. Men wielding traditional fishing tools leapt into the water in a breathtaking display of strength, speed, and competitive spirit, briefly overshadowing the official programme.

Security operatives stationed at the venue were momentarily overwhelmed by the scale of the crowd and the intensity of the moment. Punch correspondents on the scene described a charged atmosphere as cheers rang out from the riverbanks while the waters churned with activity.

After roughly 30 minutes of chaos, security personnel regained control, removing the enthusiastic fishermen from the river and restoring order for the official proceedings.

Dating back to 1934, the Argungu Fishing Festival has its roots in an older tradition introduced to mark peace between the Sokoto Caliphate and the Kebbi Kingdom. Over the decades, it has evolved into a globally recognized cultural event that goes far beyond fishing.

He recounted how his father narrowly escaped death after being implicated in an alleged coup during Nigeria’s military era.

Speaking in an interview, the actor explained that the incident occurred while he was still an infant. His father, Colonel Moses Effiong, was arrested after being linked to a plot reportedly aimed at removing former Head of State Ibrahim Babangida from power.

According to him, the situation began when his father was informed of the alleged plan by a close colleague in the military. This left him in a tough position—whether to keep silent or report the information. However, when the plot was eventually uncovered, the colleague was arrested and later mentioned Colonel Effiong during interrogation.
