‘We Never Said INEC Should Not Use IReV For 2027 Election’ – Senate

Published

The Senate has refuted reports claiming that lawmakers removed the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) Result Viewing (IReV) portal from plans for the 2027 general elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Chairman of the Senate ad hoc panel reviewing the 2026 Electoral Bill, Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire, clarified this during an appearance on ARISE Television on Thursday. He stressed that the Senate never decided to discontinue the use of IReV, explaining that the platform is designed to publish results that have already been manually counted and declared at polling units.

Adegbonmire noted that real-time transmission of results should not be confused with electronic voting, pointing out that Nigeria has yet to adopt a full e-voting system. According to him, IReV is not an e-voting tool but a software platform for uploading finalized polling unit results.

He emphasized that voting and vote counting remain manual processes, with only the figures recorded on Form EC8A uploaded to the IReV portal afterward.

The senator also warned against misinterpreting legislative discussions on electoral reforms and urged the media to report accurately. He maintained that transmitting results does not alter the integrity of the voting process, since ballot counting is still done manually, cautioning that misinformation could trigger unnecessary controversy.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.

The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.

Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.

He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.
