The Senate has threatened to withhold approval of the 2026 budget proposal for the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation over persistent delays in releasing funds to Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and the non-payment of contractors.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The warning was issued on Thursday during a budget defence session with the Accountant-General, Shamseldeen Ogunjimi, before the Senate Committee on Finance.

Committee Chairman, Senator Sani Musa, said the Senate would not consider the 2026 proposal until the office provides convincing explanations and firm assurances of improved budget implementation.

Lawmakers decried what they described as poor budget execution, noting that it has disrupted government operations and left contractors unpaid. The committee disclosed that more than ₦2.2 trillion is owed to contractors, describing the situation as unacceptable.

Senator Danladi Goje (Gombe Central) demanded accountability for public funds, particularly revenues generated following the removal of fuel subsidy and increased earnings by government-owned enterprises. He questioned how the additional funds had been utilised, noting that the National Assembly has received numerous complaints from contractors seeking intervention.

The committee also revealed that security agencies have raised concerns over inadequate funding due to irregular releases. Senators called for a review of the envelope budgeting system, with some advocating a shift to performance-based budgeting to improve transparency and efficiency.

In response, Ogunjimi urged the committee to reconsider its stance, explaining that his office can only disburse funds formally released to it and that the delays were not entirely within his control. He also cited technical challenges with the government’s payment platform but assured lawmakers that upgrades are underway.

Despite his explanations, the Senate maintained that it would not approve the 2026 budget for the Accountant-General’s office until satisfactory answers and clear commitments on improved fund releases and contractor payments are provided.
