Reps Set Up 7-Member Panel To Probe Gas Supply Crisis In Power Sector.

Published

on

The House of Representatives ad hoc committee probing power sector reforms and spending from 2006 to 2024 has set up a seven-member sub-committee to conduct a forensic audit of gas supplied to electricity generation companies (GenCos) nationwide.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The move followed the adoption of a motion moved by committee member, Harrison Nwadike, who expressed concern over the continued supply of gas to the Sapele Power Plant in Delta State despite its reported inability to generate electricity in the past year.

Nwadike stated that although the plant had remained largely non-operational, it continued to receive gas intended for power generation.

Chairman of the ad hoc committee, Al-Mustapha Aliyu, said there were increasing public concerns that Seplat Energy Company might not be delivering sufficient gas to GenCos, a development that could negatively impact electricity generation and overall power supply in the country.

Seplat Rejects Claims

In response, Seplat Energy’s Managing Director, Ibiada Itoto, refuted the allegations, stressing that the company remains fully aligned with the Federal Government’s power sector reform efforts.

She said Seplat is committed to supporting the expansion and long-term sustainability of Nigeria’s power industry.

Meanwhile, the company’s General Manager for Gas, Olubukola Fasoyin, revealed that the Sapele Power Plant currently owes Seplat about ₦20 billion for gas already supplied.

Despite the company’s explanations, Nwadike alleged that Seplat could be implicated in economic misconduct if gas meant for electricity generation had been diverted or misused over the past year.

Aliyu reacted with concern, saying it was troubling that a company of Seplat’s standing was reportedly unable to implement effective internal safeguards to prevent possible misuse of gas supplied to power plants.

The newly constituted sub-committee is chaired by Afam Victor Ogene. Other members include Kafilat Ogbara, Salisu Magaji, Faud Kayode Laguda and Harrison Nwadike, among others.

The panel is tasked with carrying out a detailed forensic audit to determine how gas supplied to power plants across the country has been utilised and to identify any potential irregularities.
