Members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State staged a protest on Wednesday over an alleged scheme to dismantle the party’s ward and local government structures ahead of upcoming congresses.
The demonstration took place in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area, with party members accusing some “bigwigs” of planning to dissolve existing ward and chapter leadership ahead of the APC congresses scheduled for February 18 and 21.
Protesters carried placards with messages such as:
-
“Governor Umo Eno, it is you we know, please call your appointees to order”
-
“They are causing crisis in APC with PDP tendencies”
-
“We built the party, save us from illegal dissolution”
-
“Gov Eno, a man of peace, our support for you, Senate President Akpabio, and President Tinubu for a second term is not negotiable”
The demonstrators, mostly serving ward and chapter executives, gathered at the Mkpat Enin Local Government Secretariat to reject plans to replace current leaders with new appointees.
The protest follows Governor Umo Eno’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, which brought several influential politicians into the party. Some of these new entrants reportedly aim to take control of the party’s ward structures.
Speaking at the protest, Mr. Clement Okon Silas, APC vice-chairmanship candidate in the October 2024 local government elections, accused the defectors of trying to hijack party structures. He warned such actions could trigger internal crises and weaken the party.
Silas said, “We are the goose that laid the golden egg. We suffered, laboured, and built this party in Mkpat Enin. But barely six months after PDP bigwigs defected into APC, they are now plotting to evict us from the same party we worked hard to grow.”
He added that dissatisfied defectors should relinquish their current political offices rather than forcibly take over party structures.
Another protester, Ubong Inyang, described the alleged plot as “an ambush on APC structures” in Mkpat Enin and cautioned that it could cause a major embarrassment for the party.
The protesters also lamented that, despite their loyalty and sacrifices, most appointments in the state are now being given to former PDP members. One protester said, “We have not benefited anything after our struggle and steadfastness. All the PAs, SAs, local government and commissioner appointments came from PDP. What is our own?”
At the conclusion of the protest, the group issued a communiqué reaffirming loyalty to the Akwa Ibom State APC led by Obong Stephen Ntokekpo, Mkpat Enin chapter chairman Utitofon Jeremiah, and the national leadership of the party.
The communiqué read:
“As the political leaders of the party in the state, we pledge our unalloyed support to all your policies, programmes, and initiatives. Our support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Governor Umo Eno for a second term is total. We will not allow anything to distract us from defending this mandate to its logical conclusion.”
The protesters called on Governor Eno, Senate President Akpabio, and President Tinubu to intervene and stop what they described as an “unprogressive plot” to destabilize the party. They warned that any attempt to impose new executives at ward or chapter levels could fracture the APC and weaken its electoral prospects.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.
The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.
Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.
He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.
“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.

Woli Agba disclosed this in a public notice shared on his Instagram page on Sunday.
In the notice issued by their solicitors, Gemgold, the comedians warned members of the public against publishing or circulating allegations they described as false and defamatory against them.
The legal notice maintained that the allegations were baseless and intended to damage the reputations of the two entertainers.
