2027: “No Zoning, No Consensus, No Forcing Anyone Out” – El-Rufai
Former Kaduna State Governor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain, Nasir El‑Rufai, has announced that the party’s 2027 presidential ticket will not be zoned, insisting that all aspirants will have the freedom to contest in open primaries.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking to Trust TV on the party’s election strategy, El‑Rufai said the ADC is mobilising vigorously at every level—from grassroots to leadership—to position itself as a strong contender in next year’s general elections.
Addressing concerns about the party’s visibility amid stiff political competition, he dismissed claims that the ADC’s efforts were limited.
“No, we are mobilising. Work is ongoing on several levels. We are mobilising very aggressively at the lowest levels, right down to the polling unit and ward levels,” he said.
He contrasted the ADC’s grassroots engagement with some ruling party lawmakers, many of whom struggle to connect with their constituents.
“Ask APC National Assembly members if they can visit their constituencies. Only a few can, and when they do, they need crash helmets because people are angry. That’s why many cannot go home for weekends or to meet their constituents,” he added.
El‑Rufai noted that the ADC has tapped into widespread public dissatisfaction and is building support from the grassroots.
No Zoning, Open Contest for All
On the issue of zoning, a key topic ahead of 2027, El‑Rufai was clear:
“We will not have zoning. No consensus, no forcing anyone to step down. Everyone will have the chance to contest, and whoever wins will be supported by all,” he said.
He explained that the party aims to unite its presidential, gubernatorial, and other aspirants behind a platform that ensures free and fair primaries without imposition or coercion.
“At the top level, we are preparing our manifesto and platform, and working to get all aspirants to agree on a process that guarantees free and fair primaries,” he added.
El‑Rufai also challenged critics to compare the ADC’s grassroots strength with that of ruling party members.
“If you doubt the ADC’s grassroots support, ask some National Assembly members to visit their constituencies without a garrison of soldiers and police to protect them,” he said.
