Group Demands CCB Probe Of Malami Over Onnoghen’s Removal, Alleged Abuse Of Office.

Fresh controversy appears to be brewing for former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), following a petition by a group of Nigerian legislative lawyers urging the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) to investigate and prosecute him over the removal of former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The petition was filed by the Association of Legislative Drafting and Advocacy Practitioners (ALDRAP) and dated February 3, 2026. The group accused Malami of abusing his office during his tenure under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Justice Onnoghen was removed from office ahead of the 2019 general elections after proceedings at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) over alleged breaches of asset declaration rules. Although he was convicted at the tribunal, the Court of Appeal overturned the conviction in November 2024.

In the petition signed by their counsel, S.O. Abang, and addressed to the Chairman of the CCB, ALDRAP alleged that Malami acted unlawfully and maliciously in orchestrating Onnoghen’s removal.

The lawyers also accused the former AGF of malicious prosecution in the case involving Justice Nnamdi Dimigba of the Federal High Court.

According to the petition, Malami abused the powers conferred on him as Attorney General, particularly the discretionary authority under Section 174 of the 1999 Constitution, which allows the AGF to institute, take over, or discontinue criminal proceedings.

ALDRAP claimed that the powers were allegedly exercised for personal, financial, and political interests rather than in pursuit of public good.

The group further alleged that Malami personally directed the CCB to discontinue some prosecutions while accelerating others for political considerations, even in cases where a prima facie case had been established.

The petition also raised concerns over alleged gifts received by Malami, including claims that he admitted to receiving more than 200 vehicles, either personally or through his non-governmental organisation, Khadimiyya for Justice and Development Initiatives.

The lawyers argued that the alleged gifts violated Sections 5, 10, and 11 of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act, 1991.

Additionally, the petition accused Malami of approving the appointment of Alhaji Abubakar Usman Gotomo, the chairman of the NGO, as Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) in 2019, in alleged breach of constitutional provisions.

The group also referenced Malami’s reported 2022 admission that he received funds and vehicles from associates to support his governorship ambition in Kebbi State, describing the action as inconsistent with the Code of Conduct law.

Describing Malami’s alleged actions as a constitutional breach, the petitioners said his conduct amounted to abuse of office and misconduct.

They urged the Code of Conduct Bureau to immediately commence investigation and prosecution.

Meanwhile, Malami is also reportedly facing separate charges instituted by the Nigerian government over allegations bordering on money laundering and terrorism financing.
