Calm Returns To PDP Secretariat As Factions Jostle Over Wadata Reopening.

Published

on

Calm was restored on Monday at the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Wadata Plaza, Abuja, despite rising political tension over attempts by a faction aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to reopen the premises after months of closure.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Reports indicate that the development followed an announcement by Samuel Anyanwu, acting national secretary under the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led PDP caretaker committee, that activities would resume at the party headquarters based on recent court rulings said to favour his group.

Anyanwu’s camp referenced what it described as favourable judicial pronouncements, including the dismissal of a legal application by rival factions seeking to compel the police to reopen the complex under their control.

However, as of Monday afternoon, the secretariat remained sealed, with security operatives maintaining a strong presence around the premises. No violence or confrontation was recorded.

The Wadata Plaza headquarters has been under police seal since November 2025, following clashes that erupted when rival factions attempted to hold parallel National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings, forcing security agencies to intervene.

Since then, the closure has come to symbolise the deepening internal crisis within the PDP, with the party split into competing camps ahead of the 2027 general elections.

While Anyanwu’s faction insists that recent court decisions support its claim to the secretariat, opposing groups have rejected the move, arguing that control of the building must await the final determination of ongoing court cases.

The National Publicity Secretary of the Kabiru Turaki-led faction, Ini Ememobong, warned against any attempt to take over the secretariat, describing such moves as unlawful and contemptuous of the courts, noting that the matter remains before both the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal.

Similarly, Farida Umar, a PDP National Executive Committee member and Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the same faction, dismissed the planned reopening, insisting that the Wike-aligned group had no legal or moral right to occupy the secretariat while litigation was still pending.

Leaders of the Wike-backed bloc, however, maintained that recent court pronouncements and recognition by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had resolved the leadership question, giving the recognised caretaker committee the authority to resume operations at the party’s headquarters.

A source familiar with the faction’s position said the declaratory judgment of the Federal High Court had removed any ambiguity about the party’s legitimate leadership, arguing that there was no justification for keeping the secretariat sealed.

Security sources said the priority of law enforcement was to prevent any forced entry or breakdown of order at the facility, while party insiders described the standoff as being driven largely by personal and political interests rather than the survival of the party.

Meanwhile, the FCT Police Command spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, said the command had not been officially informed of any plan to unseal the PDP secretariat, adding that she had limited information on the matter.

A family source told Vanguard that the General was speaking with his identical twin brother, who resides in the United Kingdom, at the time of the attack.

According to the source, the twins maintained a daily routine of speaking around midnight, but the conversation took a sudden turn that night when unusual activity was noticed at the General’s end.

He said the line went dead abruptly after the General paused during the call, apparently due to the unfolding situation at the base.

The twin brother reportedly made repeated attempts to reconnect, sending messages and calling continuously, but received no response throughout the night.

“He kept trying until about 4 am, but there was no answer,” the source said.

The family later confirmed the tragedy after a senior military officer contacted them around 6:30 am, informing them that the base had come under attack and that the Brigade Commander was among those killed.

The relative described the incident as devastating, noting that communication had broken down during the assault.

The late General was later buried alongside other fallen soldiers in Maiduguri, Borno State.

He wrote, “Chiemeka Chibuzor’s wedding is hereby suspended. More than a thousand applications. No more wedding pending further directive from me.”

The cleric had earlier this week publicly invited proposals for her marriage, setting conditions that included the suitor being young and in good physical and mental health, alongside promised financial support and housing benefits.

He also said the couple would enjoy lifelong support, including shared property ownership and periodic welfare checks from church members.

The development follows a similar arrangement recently conducted by the church involving a non-verbal autistic man who was married in a ceremony organised by the ministry.
