Obi made the remarks on Saturday in Asaba, Delta State, during the official integration of the state Obidient Movement into the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He called on Nigerians to unite and rescue the nation from poor governance ahead of the 2027 elections.

Highlighting the country’s poverty crisis, he noted that roughly 150 million Nigerians now live below the poverty line. “Our country today has more people living in poverty than China and India combined. Those two countries have nearly three billion people, yet we, with just 250 million, surpass them in poverty,” Obi said.

He also criticised the government’s economic policies, claiming that the nation has taken on more debt since the removal of the fuel subsidy than all previous administrations combined.

Obi stressed that the country’s challenges cut across ethnic and religious lines. “It is no longer about tribe; no tribe buys bread cheaper. It is not about religion; no religion buys bread cheaper. They are all suffering,” he said.

Calling for a change in leadership, Obi insisted that Nigeria is not poor but badly led. “This country is not poor; it is being badly led. We want to do the right thing for the country; the country has suffered enough,” he added, promising that the ADC is committed to providing solutions.

At the event, ADC Deputy National Chairman for the South-South, Senator Andrew Uchendu, echoed Obi’s concerns, warning that Nigeria has failed in nearly every sector and urgently needs reforms and responsible leadership to tackle its socio-economic and security crises.
