The official Wreath-Laying and Remembrance Ceremony took place at the General Murtala Ramat Muhammed Cenotaph in Ikoyi, the location where he was killed. The event drew senior government officials, representatives of the Nigerian Army, members of the diplomatic community and other notable guests.

Speaking at the ceremony, the late leader’s daughter and Chief Executive Officer of the Murtala Muhammed Foundation, Dr Aisha Muhammed-Oyebode, reflected on the enduring pain of losing her father at the age of 12, noting that the loss still feels fresh five decades later.

She said the gathering was not only to honour his memory but to express gratitude for his life of service, describing him as a courageous and principled leader who viewed leadership as a sacred responsibility.

Dr Muhammed-Oyebode described her father as a symbol of decisive leadership and unwavering belief in Nigeria’s potential, stressing that the anniversary was a call to recommit to the values he stood for — integrity, service and national unity. She also highlighted his lasting Pan-African legacy, particularly Nigeria’s support for Angola’s independence during his tenure.

In his tribute, Governor Sanwo-Olu described General Muhammed as an exceptional Pan-Africanist whose bold leadership helped redefine Nigeria’s political and administrative direction within a remarkably short period.

“He governed with courage, dignity and a strong sense of purpose, always putting Nigeria first,” the governor said, noting that the country lost one of Africa’s finest leaders.

Also speaking, Major General (rtd.) Ahmed Taiwo, representing the family of late Colonel Ibrahim Taiwo, recalled the fearlessness of both officers, saying they ignored threats to their lives in their determination to serve the nation.

He noted that despite serving for just 200 days, their leadership left a lasting imprint on Nigeria’s history.

The ceremony ended with renewed calls on Nigerians, especially those in leadership positions, to draw inspiration from General Murtala Muhammed’s legacy of patriotism, sacrifice and selfless service, and to uphold the ideals of discipline, integrity and national unity he championed.
