Former Minister: ‘My Life Would Be Different If Murtala Muhammed Wasn’t Assassinated’.

Muhammed led Nigeria from July 29, 1975, until his assassination in Lagos on February 13, 1976.
Speaking at a strategic policy workshop organized by the Murtala Muhammed Foundation, led by Aisha Muhammed-Oyebode, in collaboration with the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs under Eghosa Osaghae, Akinyemi reflected on Muhammed’s lasting impact. The workshop, themed “Has Africa Come of Age? Murtala Muhammed’s Pan-African Vision 50 Years After,” was held Thursday at the NIIA auditorium in Victoria Island, Lagos.
Akinyemi said, “Dr. Aisha Muhammed-Oyebode said she misses her father very personally. Let me assure her that I also miss him in a very personal way. I am certain that if General Muhammed had not been assassinated, not only would Nigeria’s history have been different, but my own personal life might have been different as well.”
He described Muhammed as an intellectual who openly analyzed political issues and was unafraid to disagree publicly with views he opposed. According to Akinyemi, Nigeria needs leaders like Muhammed—those willing to take principled stands even when it conflicts with popular opinion.
Recalling a personal encounter, Akinyemi said:
“I had never met him directly, but I was aware of the positions he publicly took. During a conference with military officers discussing the Middle East, when the university community was strongly pro-Palestinian, Muhammed surprised everyone. As he got up to pray, he paused, turned to the room, and said, ‘Why are we discussing this? Bloody waste of time.’ He prayed and returned, demonstrating that he could openly disagree with prevailing authority or expectations.”
Akinyemi emphasized that Muhammed was a Head of State who instilled pride in Nigerians and earned respect on the continent and internationally.
“For some reason, people have not forgotten that we once had a Head of State who brought out pride in Nigerians. He took clear stances on issues, and if he disagreed with you, he explained his reasoning,” Akinyemi added.
He concluded that leaders of Muhammed’s caliber, who openly speak truth to power, are exactly what Nigeria needs.
